A pirate station makes the Arbitron ratings in Orlando

Is this the first time something like this ever happened? Anyone ever hear that pirate?

I usually pick up "The Hog" on that frequency. A few times, I got 95.7 The Beat from Tampa. I'm usually around Winter Park up 436 to Apopka, so I'm guessing the pirate is elsewhere from this area. What kind of music does this pirate station play if anyone's heard it?

I remember I used to hear an uncensored rap station on 95.9 years ago. I think they got busted.

I actually favor these pirate stations more than all these annoying translators for Praise FM. At least it's something DIFFERENT.

No, this actually happened to me and a couple of my college roommates at the University of Florida in Gainesville around 1970. We were WZAP. My roommate was a genius when it came to electronics and built a transmitter out of a Heathkit colorbar generator. We dropped antenni out of the Twin Towers Dorms on Campus and covered Gainesville "Like the Sun Covers Dixie"...That's how we got busted..Beat #1 WGGG in the Arbitron! Ah! The Memories ...BIG APE!

95.9 was actually a "professional" pirate. A commercial operation with a sister station in Miami. They had a website and sold plenty of advertising. They had a big signal, eminating from a large industrial radio tower in either Pine Hills or West Orlando (I forgot which.) The FCC ignored them for a long time, but was finally forced to take action when they began airing uncensored rap music and listener calls, stating "f--- the police", among other things.

They were also operating on 93.5 for awhile. The overmodulated signal caused severe interference to both WFLZ-93.3-Tampa and WOGK-93.7-Ocala.

Another pirate with big coverage was 96.9. They played continuous, uninterrupted techno music. I could carry them up I-4 from Celebration to Sanford on the car radio. Didn't last long before suddenly disappearing. FCC, I assume (?)

95.9 was 95 Live... You can google the names of the handles used by on-air staff and see lots of interesting things. (The legal troubles, interviews in a local news magazine.. etc)

96.9 was Foundation radio. They were also busted. 93 Dance... that's one of the two that were around 93-94MHz ... The other was "Raw 94" .. All busted and shut down.

Google "Florida Low Power" and you'll get a site with listings of several busts throughout our state's history.

The pirate did not make the book. The pirate listening, in diaries by frequency, was given by ascription to WHOG. When it was found the listening was not to WHOG, they retabulated WHOG's ratings to exclude that listening.

Pirates themselves are not listed in the Arbitron survey, as their policy is to only list licensed stations insofar as broadcast stations are concerned (streams and such are subject to a separate policy).

That was not the case back in the 70"s and I have a book to prove it...

Was it really a pirate? There are two LP stations licensed on the frequency. One in Christmas (100W) and one in Buena Ventura Lakes (29W.)

Ape--

There were some crazy things back in the 70's. I remember seeing "WLS" and "WCFL" and other big AM's (the REAL Clear Channels! :D) showing up beneath the line in the book in the town I grew up in. However, are you sure your book was an Arbitron or "ARB" as they were known then, and not a "Pulse" or "Hooper"?

ARB hung their hat on quality accredited research which included the big "General Manager" station surveys sent out to every radio station before the rating period where one would have to list power, frequency, sign-on and sign-off times, disc-jockey schedules, special shows, etc., in order to get the proper credit in the up coming book.
