A pitch from the Morning Mess

Star 94 hired KCPR to pitch stories about the Morning Mess. Here's what I got this morning. What do you think? Would Ashton Kutcher bite?

I’m sending this to both of you because it’s such a crazy story, I’m hoping someone might be able to pick it up – possibly as a Peach Buzz item?

Yesterday afternoon, all three members of STAR 94’s The Morning Mess had their Myspace pages hacked—essentially resulting in a massive internet rumor that one of the hosts, Marco, had died. It began with an early afternoon Bulletin sent to all of SuperPhat Mikey’s Myspace friends entitled “RIP Marco” that alluded to Marco’s death. Next, the hacker posted comments on Marco’s page, seemingly from Shannon and SuperPhat Mikey, with notes that read: ‘We miss you already’ and ‘I can’t believe you’re gone’ (you can see some of these comments on Marco’s Myspace page here: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=40243597). Calls began pouring into both the STAR 94 Listeners and office lines – former listeners from Indianapolis (where “The Morning Mess” used to host their show on RadioNOW) even called in and spoke with Cindy & Ray on air yesterday trying to get the scoop on what happened to Marco.

Within an hour of finding out about the hacker, Marco received more than 10,000 views to his page along with a slew of comments, phone calls and text messages from concerned friends and listeners. Shannon and SuperPhat Mikey also spent the better part of the day trying to combat the rumor—however, they had to wait until today after working with Myspace to regain access to their pages. Each of the team members has posted blogs explaining that Marco was just hacked and is not dead.

Although he admits it was funny at first, Marco has now offered a $5000 reward to anyone who can help him find the identity of this hacker! Let me know if you’d like to speak to him – he can probably offer a bit of additional insight on how this whole situation affected him.

So we're supposed to believe that Marco's many fans spend their days glued to the internet just waiting for news of his demise?

Sounds about right.

"Too lame for words, but I'm sure others on this board will have a few choice ones."

Are you referring to this stunt or Marco's interviewing skills?

And LOL at a "massive" internet rumor involving this guy.

wait a sec, was it 600K or $600 they r spending to promote this show. either way they should get their money back from kcpr.

Marco told Shannon that Mikey is fat,
Mikey told Marco that Shannon is flat,
Now Shannon is cryin'
The cold cuts ain't flyin'
And the buyers ain't buyin'
So is da Mess a lyin'
'Bout Marco a dyin'

Marco told Shannon that Mikey is dead,
Shannon caught Marco and Mikey in bed,
Caught in the hay,
The boys are real gay,
Now Shannon is cryin'
The cold cuts ain't flyin'
And nobody's buyin'
That Marco is dyin'

A mess is a mess,
So don't try to guess,
Dead or alive,
It's all PR jive.

We agree on something. My exact thoughts. This is what they paid $600k for. Some lame stunt to draw attention to their show.

Rodney posted "Star 94 hired KCPR to pitch stories about the Morning Mess." At first I thought they hired 93.1 FM San Luis Obispo but that didn't make any sense. Then I read the stunt and about the PR firm. I think they would have done better hiring 93.1 FM San Luis Obispo.

I miss Shannon and Nudge in the mornings...

What a weak pull for ratings.

Dear Indy,

Take them back.

I'd rather have another spanish station..

Tom...what a masterpiece.

Call me what you want, but what little I've heard of the Mess, I think they're good for what Star's trying to do. Just my 2 pennies, though.

Can I just express my hatred for one thing realllll quick...

THEIR IMAGING KILLS ME! Its to in your face, its overmodulated and it has little swipes and trails and stuff that carry over loudly into the next song...and I think it sounds HORRIBLE!

sorrry...

Clark-
They certainly do a better morning show than I do poetry.
Maybe I should take Winreader's advice and join AA........

I used to work at that station, pre "Star 94", back when Gary McKee could actually generate REAL buzz without the need for a PR agency flack creating nonsense and stupidity.

Over the years, I myself was featured with different stunts three separate times on USA Today's national Life section left side of the page rundown, and I wasn't doing mornings, nor did I have an agent or a flack working media connections. Just good, honest, localized work, and trying hard to make content relevant plus have some fun. And the ratings proved it out.

This stinks of desperation.

I want my Steve and Vikki back!

You will, in July on B98.5

And, Tom, Pulitzer Prize material, buddy. Back from vacation and working hard to get WRAS straightened out from the storms and Tom "Taylor from the trailer" is still on stride! I wanna be like Tom when I grow up!
