A Plea To 101.9 Re: Hurricane Irene

It is being speculated that Hurricane Irene will be hitting the New York City area on Sunday afternoon. Winds are expected to be between 75-100 mph (Category 1).

Memo to Merlin Media: If you really want 101.9 to make a great impression as "New York's first only FM news station," here's what you do on Sunday: Wall-to-wall hurricane coverage. No Kim Kardashian updates, no shoe shopping deals, and not a word about chocolate. Just weather coverage, as well as your traffic on the 5's for those that are already on the road (Jeff McKay should be in attendance that day, as well), and that's it.

You just might have some WCBS and WINS listener evacuating them, if you do that good of a job. I'll be sampling you on my battery-powered radio on Sunday. Please don't let me down.

Really can't see WINS or WCBS listeners pulling out with candles and batteries and heading inland without their faithful umbillical cords.

Perhaps available 30-40 female hurricane vigilants react differently from males, though. Hurricane G-l-o-r-i-a certainly had a social impact in the eastern NYC households 27 years ago. Talk about a homewrecking female. So WEMP might get some mileage out of the female name 'Irene'. You know -- some traction for when the next one imperils the region.

If the next metro NY hurricane of the century is called Franz or Horatio, though, tough noogies.

@Steve re: "... WEMP might get some mileage out of the female name Irene": You know, I never saw it that way... good angle! Imagine if earthquakes were named...

All that being said, from what I gather, 101.9 did a somewhat respectable job during the earthquake earlier this week (although I wouldn't say it was to the point of them "claiming victory" as they did). At least they'll have some time to prepare for the hurricane, so there'll be no excuses. At this point, how 101.9 operates during natural disasters separates them from 101.9 itself being considered a natural disaster.
