A Precursor To 97.1 Dropping The "Free-FM" Name?

With the news that KLSX has dropped the "Free2HD" channel from its HD2 channel and replacing it with a straight simulcast of its (soon to be sold) KFRG/Froggy, I wonder if we will wake up Monday morning to a "new" 97.1. I know I've read on this board in the past that the name doesn't matter to listeners, but with this development, it's anyone's guess...

Hey, maybe 97.1 will flip to country! ;D

I'm listening to 97.1 HD2 on AOL CBS radio and they're running Adam's morning show. :D

I'm not saying they're not running froggy on 97.1 FM HD2 (I'm out of HD radio reception range, and I don't have an HD radio), I'm just suprised why they wouldn't carry this over to the internet. And they just announced it was KLSX HD-2.

I'm not saying you're making it up, I'm just typing what I'm hearing. :D 8)

P.S.: KLSX going country? :'( :p ;)

Let's divide that 1.7 share in two.

Well, it wouldn't be me lying, but rather AllAccess.com, which reported this item today.

Maybe the change will be made this weekend...

Didn't say you did lie, but you did say it as if it had already happened. And you didn't cite AllAccess in the event the news turned out to be less than factual.

Sorry if I jumped the gun, I guess I've read too many tales and leaped too soon. :(

Sorry. ;D

I'll keep tuned to see where 97.1 HD2 goes this weekend.

KLSX-HD2 has been dropped from AOL Radio as of today. It still works if you go to the URL of the player (and its still streaming Adam's show all day) but you can't otherwise find it on AOL Radio...

CBS wouldn't run the frog on their KLSX-HD2 stream, because they wouldn't want to potentially eat away at the streaming numbers for the KFRG stream.

Only 4 streams have shown in the PPM and KFRG is not one of them. Since, so far, the streaming numbers are not generating sales and do not get added to the FM signal ratings, there is nothing to lose.

Stations don't need their streams to show up in the ratings in order to sell ads on them, because they know exactly how many people are listening. Radio ratings only exist because the medium doesn't allow for knowing that intrinsically. Streaming doesn't have that problem; the stream provider knows how many people connect, where they are, etc. The only thing you can't reliably collect is demographic data, which means the ads are less valuable, but they're still able to sell them and it wouldn't be prudent to dilute them needlessly.

And how much advertising does KFRG sell on its stream from clients in LA or interested in LA and Orange County listening? Since the HD signal on the LA stations barely gets to the edge of LA County to the east, and none reliably make it past the unrated Ontario / Fontana area, the use of the KFRG signal on an LA HD signal has no impact on KFRG's stream at all.

Since the first step in radio advertising is the demographic target and streams can not give this data, not much advertising is bought for the stream alone; further, there is not much advertiser interest in streams outside the local market of each station. On the other hand, encoded streams will be shown in the PPM data if they have enough audience to meet the minimum standards (MRS) and will be of sales value to stations.

The real issue is that a large percentage of agency spots are recorded by AFTRA talent and subject to the agency "no stream" dictate put on nearly all campaigns using that talent.

Your last point is of course the real thing that will kill it; since KFRG has simply added KLSX-HD2 to their legal ID, there's no evidence of an automation system in place in LA that could handle that, which means no ad injection/spot covering capabilities at KLSX, which means no streaming.
