A problem I have with HD Radio

I have another problem here, if I have just some static on my reception, which I am only 30 miles from Austin's towers, then I don't get the HD Reception. So that means I am not expose to get this station? If DX is not important any more I know of a few places in Shiner, TX and a few others that is well out of KIXS's 108's range and they listen to them than any other station that is closer. I was checking out my HDTV tuner last night, I just have a pair of rabbit ears watching a show in 6.1 surround and wow that sounded excellent!

HD TV and HD radio are completely different animals. 30 miles is damn good for HD radio reception from what I understand. I have no first hand experience because I'm not buying one until I find one at Goodwill for 6 bucks like a member at some other list did and I certainly would never put one in a car even if I were paid by Boob Strumble himself.... which I think is probably their next step: giving them away on street corners.

It does ok I mean its not great in the car. But home its good. I did a test on Houston radio today going home Houston shines at least 80 miles out on analog. I wish HD could do that.

I see, but you'll pay $150 for a receiver using an obsolete system

This may not considered this a major manufacturer but they continue to make AM C-Quam tuners, and not too expensive either. 150.00 each. I'm considering buying one.

Good luck finding a station for that one.

I have a whole room full of obsolete receivers, most made before 1960 each of which can outperform an IBOC receiver with a 1' piece of wire for an antenna

Well at night I'll have hundreds of miles to find them as long as they aren't next to some IBOC station spewing hash like an old factory belches smoke that fouls the air for miles on a beautiful clear day.

Bozoville.

Nope, it's called Analog, MA

Again with the 3rd grade "humor". Gee, Bob you really ought to do "Open Mike" night. :)

I can't help but think how much more convincing your position might be if you could lose the "elementary school" attempt at humor.

Emphasis on attempt.

Sorry if I come off as angry. That's not the case at all. There's actually a couple of pretty good discussion threads on this board at the moment.

Then again there's also Boob Struble and there's been another Pocket Radio ejection, recently.

I have no dog in the HD race. Never have. I like the idea of better fidelity. I believe it must exist for AM to survive. HD AM provides the improvement.

BTW, as of last month, I'm no longer in the AM side of the business. After 10 years, it's good to work for myself again. :)

I'm just trying to elevate the discussion up to somewhere near the Radio Disney listener level. Some of my fellow hams are having trouble with that concept. :)

Well it could be worse, I had to suppress a couple of cracks when I saw the HD Jump Experience title of the thread.

It is, IF you have any good HD content. I'm lucky enough to have an AM near me that sounds GREAT in HD, along with (with an outside antenna since I'm 70 miles away) most of the Boston FM's all of which are in HD and almost all multicast. It was well worth the price of the BA Receptor I bought...which also has an Aux input for Ipods, etc.

As mentioned in another post, I have to say that my new Insignia AM/FM/HD/CD/MP3 car radio's performance is outstanding! And for $119, a great value whether you believe in the whole HD radio thing or not. I have to say, the HD portion completely exceeds my somewhat original and skeptical expectations. The HD performance, at least on the FM side was great! Honestly, there are far more expensive radios with not as many features. To me the HD portion is a nice benefit that doesn't cost extra. So why not??

I enjoy the HD2 of KEDT-FM in Corpus Christi, TX when it is on. A very eclectic old jazz format. Havn't seen anything like it anywhere. Not even on the net. Locks in great at home and around town. Very enjoyable.

I haven't heard much difference in sound between HD and analog despite the baloney about CD quality sound, the lousy reception, adjacent channel interference and artificial sounding highs (because they are recreated) have caused me to pass and I've heard the best under bad conditions no doubt (I will try to check out this particular radio under more favorable circumstance but am certainly not going to pay 250 bucks for one or the 200.00 it was on sale for the other day). The sound of them is very fatiguing to the ear after a little while also as is anything artificial. My car radio sounds great and I use my computer for home listening for the most part through my Marantz for 7 bucks a month, my FM car radio sounds fine to me and has great reception, no need to cut down the range for this dubious increase in synthesized treble, course if you like artificial sound HD may be your bag, not mine. If 3" speakers and 10- 20 mile range (if you are lucky) are your thing go for it. Myself, I like bass and realism both of which I haven't heard on an HD radio unless subwoofers and an external amp are added. I have a Meduci AM stereo tuner on the way for 150.00 which I'm told blows away AM IBOC as far as sound and reception goes. I'll plug it into my Marantz 2385 185WRMS per channel @ 8 ohms and 240 WRMS per channel at 4 ohms driven continuously receiver's auxiliary inputs and listen to some good sounding music, I use double large advents with this, and this is a real reproducible comparable way to measure the output of an amplifier BTW not music power or just "watts" as advertised today. HD radios are lucky if they put out 2-3 watt RMS with minimal distortion per channel into their 3" speakers, just about right for elevator music in your dentist's office. The FM section on the Marantz is also excellent, the AM section is terrible, hence the addition of the Meduci which sells for 150.00 including shipping. I do not work for Meduci and do not work for pro radio, I am an amateur radio operator of which my call sign is: Letters: KB, number 1, and letters: OKL, (I put that in as someone who obviously knows nothing about amateur radio accused me of having "fake" call letters. I have no financial reason to plug anything unlike some of the posters here who continuously post and repost about certain car receivers ad nauseum..

The first 300 times you posted about this particular car radio was fascinating, it is getting a little old now.

Ever listen to Classic Jazz Corner? It's not eclectic but plays a lot of great stuff from the 50's and 60's. Locks in every time I turn it on (on my computer ;D) seriously though it is a great station if you like old acoustic jazz and no commercials.

I'll check it out next time I get an IP address in my car for free. :)

I have an HD car radio (got it as a b-day gift) and I'm pretty content. Would I buy one? If you can find me a model that has the ability to turn off HD-tuning, then yes! One of the things that annoys me with HD radio is when you're driving out in the middle of nowhere and the signal keeps going in and out. I'd rather listen to nothing than have a shaky HD signal.

With that said, there are some stations whose HD signals reach quite a ways. I live about 75 miles south of Phoenix, AZ and I can lock in KPKX and its multicast station (80's music) with no problem.
