pal...you're kidding right? Some of those songs didn't test well in Indiana for airplay in North Carolina. Just ask the some of the brilliant consultants. Their ONLY Programmers dream is a Seeburg Selcect-O-Matic 100...with the Pickering Stylus for B sides removed. The same 50 songs over and over, changed once a month. OOOOh there's the Contours with "Do You Love Me" again. I wonder what's next? Wooly Bully? Maybe "Hanky Panky"? No, it's "Brown Eyed Girl"! Yeah!

You're list is interesting. Add some Donovan "Hurdy Gurdy Man" for me in that mix, and "Hot Smoke And Sassafras" Bubble Puppy, "Hello It's Me" by Nazz and "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" Status Quo.

OK the jig is up, this was a set-up............they are my choice for the greatest songs ever written (CUTS 1-11), not for radio programming (Because, yes, you are right, they are overplayed). But cuts by spirit and donovan ( I only included 2 , but I have compiled a list of well over 3,000), were included to see if anyone agreed with me that they are over looked by programmers along with thousands of other cuts. You were pretty close in responding what I wanted to see, I especially liked your facetious reference of testing in Indiana for play in North Carolina, that was good. I also liked your reference to the jukebox as a programmers tool. I think you got my point. Having said all that, I really admire cuts 1-11 as rock opera's,true masterpieces, and I never get tired of listening to them at home when I get the urge, not every time I turn on the radio.
PS: your four song choices were most excellent !!!!!

8) These are great songs. I have heard all of them in recent times on WYAY-FM True Oldies 106.7. Their website is www.wyay.com.

OK, throw in some Seeds- "Pushin' Too Hard", Electric Prunes "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night", Grass Roots "I'd Wait A Million Years, Hollies "Carrie-Ann", Paul Revere & The Raiders- "Kicks", Beatles- "Back In The USSR", Santana- "Oye Como Va", Zombies - "She's Not There", Spirit - "I Got A Line On You", Bobby Fuller 4- "I Fought The Law", Steppenwolf- "Rock Me", and Cream - "Badge".

Reading all these posts - they're ALL interesting, but here is MY question:

are we talking "A Programmer's Dream" in terms of 50/60's AS A WHOLE or 50/60's on the "rock" side of things? 'Cos I'm reading this list and I'm like, "wait a minute, this sounds like "A Programmer's Dream" for one of those CLASSIC ROCK formats, particularly along the lines of EARLY WNEW-FM (Rosko, Scottso, Allison Steele - circa like 1967 to 1972 - 'NEW's vintage, if you ask me!)...

andrea...ya caught on. After being told we're washed up and useless to society and the economy (read too old at 52), we're seething.
And thanks for remebering Scotso and Allison.

Let's add First Edition "Just Stopped In To See What Condition My Condition Was In", "You, I" The Rugbys, Yardbirds and some Max Frost and The Troopers.

programmers dream was a put on, and yes it did lean a little towards classic rock, , i just wanted to get the creative juices flowing, an idea of what people liked, other than the obvious overplayed ones................ AMFMSW gets an A plus for Max frost and the troopers,...AZjoe great picks "Badge" and "I Got A line On You"... Yea, This is what I'm Talking about baby.

here's more:
Apricot Brandy -Rhinoceros
Blood Rock - DOA
Cold Blood (feat. Lydis Pense)- I'm a good woman
Dwight Tilly Band - I'm on Fire

On The POP Side:
People - I Love You
Timmy Thomas - Why can't we live together
William DeVaughn - Be Thankful for what you got. (classic lyrics: Thou you may not drive a great big cadillac, Sun rooftop, digging the scene, with the ganster lean)..something like that ???
Bill Blacks Combo - Don't Be Cruel

I'm glad that SOMEBODY gets that I get it!! :) And as a fellow "boomer" (I'm 49!)....WE ARE VALUABLE!!

As for remembering Scottso and Allison (and Rosko....), how can I not? They were a part of radio's history, particularly in the NYC area, that NOT a LOT of people ARE WILLING to acknowledge.....

You're forgiven... :) ANY list with THOSE three songs on it (particularly DeVaughn's!) IS A GOOD LIST!!

Hey AJ, if you like DeVaughn.......remember the Dells 1969 remake of thier 1956 smash "Oh What a Night",or 1972 remake of "Smoke gets in your Eyes" by Blue Haze. but the real gem is the James Brown "Doin' It to Death" listed on the record as The JB's.
I did two (classic rock and Solid Gold Soul ) gigs a week at Kirthland Air Force Base NCO club for 22 years and I learned a lot of Classic Rock and Old Soul from the requests, and I would find all those cuts, by the following week, and my reputaion was forever sealed.

Thanks, SO COOL!! (I think you're the FIRST person that's called me AJ!! 8) )

Yes, I DO REMEMBER the Dells 1969 remake of THEIR OWN "Oh What a Night" - SWEET!! :)

Alright, Pala - you're forgiven!! :)

WOW, Pala -- you're DEFINITELY back on my good list!! :) :) These are ALL GREAT SONGS!! 8) 8)

OK AJ or amfmsw, azjerry, FONZE or anyone out there........ here is MY FINAL ENTRY in the form of a tough tough question. What is the exact relationship between Freddy fender and Scotty Wayne and whose Idea was it.
Be very very specific in your answer and be quick in your response, no searching.

Freddy Fender was Scotty Wayne, a name he recorded under early in his career, to sound like Elvis. Holy One(Only One) was a song he released under that name.

Just a sidebar :) -

"Though you may not drive
A great big Cadillac
Gangsta whitewalls
TV antennas in the back

You may not have
A car at all
But remember, brothers and sisters
You can STILL stand tall

Diamonds in the back
Sunroof down
Diggin the scene
With the gangsta lean..."

Couldn't resist 8) - ALWAYS was a HUGE fan of this song!! :)

AZJerry and AJ you are both awesome......Freddy Fender recorded as Scotty Wayne at the behest of his manager, because of a little trouble in Louisiana. "Holy Only" was too controvertial of a title and they changed it to "Only One". AJ you found the right lyrics, good job. I'm terrible at lyrics.

Both of you write me at [email protected], I have a special prize for both of you, if you wish.

Thanks Pal Al

AZJoe........... not AZJerry I apologize I chat with a AZJerry on the New Mexico Board, pardon the slip.
