A Question about 3 stations

Hey Guys And Gals:

I need help on 3 stations.

1. When did 99.9 WWOG change to Beautiful Music WKQS?

2. Any info on 103.5 before it was WSHE AOR? When did the frequncy go on air? The yearbooks have 1971 and I know that is not right.
(Was it WWIL Country?)

3. I found on REC-FM site that 980 had WWHR calls granted to them on 12-8-86, was it still oldies then or that health Talk WNN? And when did WLOD go to WPIP? Didn't the oldies format end on 980 in 1987?

Thanks again for your help!!

WSHE 103.5 went on the air long before 1971 you need to find an older yearbook. I don't have the exact date but it was sometime in the late 1950's. The 1971 date is actually is when the call letters changed from WSRF-FM.

You are right the station was WWIL-FM. The change of WWIL 1580 WWIL-FM 103.5 happened in January 1967 when Van Patrick Broadcasting bought the stations. Van Patrick had been a suscessful sports announcer in Detroit and also for the Mutual Broadcasting System. It's a wonder WSRF wasn't a sports station.

The dates on WKQS and 980 are a bit fuzzy.

OK......They got the call letters early before they made the switch and actually had a top of hour ID for about a month that said "98 Gold is WWHR Pompano Beach...Where all the great songs have gone!!".

Then on exactly 1-1-87, they flipped to a new format, which was NOT Health Talk/Motivational...It was "Heart & Soul", from the Satellite Music Network (all Satellite except Jay Michaels' morning show, then local weather inserts the rest of the day), the slogan was "WHR". Format was very short lived (basically Motown Oldies), and by the summer of that year they flipped to "WNN..The Winners News Network", which was not exactly Health Talk either at that time, but motivational tapes being played all day (Tony Robbins, Earl Nightingale, etc).

Hey Mike:

thanks for the info!!! Do you happen to know when WWIL 103.5 started there country format? And did 103.5 when it was WSRF FM have a soft rock format or soft AC format. I found that info on another radio site and I wanted to see if that was true.

Thanks Again!!! You have a great memory!!!

By the time I started listening to WWIL they were doing a MOR format so I don't remember much about the days as a country station. WWIL AM/FM used to simulcast but when it became WSRF AM/FM they split with the AM doing Top 40 and the FM doing what they used to call "Housewife Rock" so call it soft rock or A/C and that would be close enough. Johnny Dark came up with the format since he was PD of both stations. If you ever find him he would probably be a good person to ask about it.

WSRF-FM was automated, I used to call them when the automation messed up. The soft rock format even lasted through the call letter change to WSHE, for awhile anyway. Tommy Judge (Milner) (the GM's son) was doing what they called "Surf-a-delic" on 1580 at night which was progressive rock. They must have got good response because they moved it to the FM under PD Gary Grainger. Gene Milner and Gary Grainger consulted stations all over the country on how to do and sell the progressive rock format.
