I have a question about WKIX-FM 102.9? Is it not owned by Curtis Media Group? I ask this because it is not listed on the Curtis page along with the other stations. However, WKIX-AM Channel 85 IS listed on that page (and shares the same River Forks Road address) as WKIX-FM 102.9. Can someone please fill me in on all of this? Thanks!

WKIX-FM is owned by McClatchey Broadcasting, former owner of WRBZ 850 The Buzz.

WKIX-AM is now owned by Curtis Media. I believe McClatchey has an agreement to sell advertising on WKIX-AM.

The AM and FM are in the same building. All the transmission equipment for the former BUZZ was already installed on that building,
so it was easier to leave it there for the time being. WKIX-AM is being programmed by Curtis Media.

Thanks for the explantion! I assume that WKIX-FM 102.9 is NOT being programmed by Curtis.

;D ;D ;D Sounds like a retarded monkey with a set of darts is programming it. Geez what a musical disaster; "Because of You" by Tony Bennett into "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. Great flow!

I agree!!! Nothing is wrong with a LARGE variety of Oldies! The Oldies stations with small playlists burn themselves out quickly. A very good Oldies station has a HUGE playlist!

Think of it this way: You throw a bunch of 45s, LPs, etc. in the middle of a room and then pick them up and play them without any thought to Tempo, and category....like: C&W, Rock, MOR, etc., and then don't even think about putting them IN ORDER...like: 1955 to 1962 to 1968 to 1970 whatever and then slide backwards. Gee.....but maybe the Moooooorons over there CAN'T figure that one out! Any thoughts?

Yeah, here's one thought:

You might well be the world's greatest radio programmer but...when you divebomb a radio board with a self-proclaimed "The Legend" handle, and proceed to call people you don't even know morons and retarded monkeys, nobody is going to take anything you say seriously. The End.

Could "The Legend" actually be the one and only Mr. Tom Collins???

It does make it more difficult.

??? ??? ;D :-\ ;D Oooooooh, did I hurt the kid with 2 years board oping's feelings????? So sorry! Listen to the station (AM) and if you think that it's well thought-out....then don't ever quit that minimum dollar job and pretend to be a "know-it-all" wannabe. Meet you outside????
The Leg..........................END!

Oh... looks like Tom Collins is MAD that he is no longer GM at WBRF-FM 98.1 in Galax. I bet that he misses Majic 94.1-LOL!!!!

With all due respect to everyone...

The term oldies has a million different meanings to a million different people. Ask a 20 year old & "Matchbox 20" is an oldie. Ask a 60 year old and it's "The Crystals".

I have been lucky enough to be a PD at WTRG in that market when it was pretty hot. Our ratings were built on tested music with a Carolina flair... produced with the best imaging we could provide with our resources. We spent hours tweaking the audio... which ranged from the 50s to the 70s.... to try to make every song sound as good as we could. We had hunger for improving every facet of our product.

Moreso, we were lucky enough to have some truly incredible talent at our microphones... both in production & on air. It paid off, we saw #1 25-54 ratings and lots and lots of money.

But, as in all radio stations, it takes a village to raise a rating. Everyone from the receptionist to the cleaning crew add to creating an environment conducive to magnetically attracting numbers.

The current PD at Kix 102.9, Doug Austin was part of that crew. Not only did he assist in all areas of this very successful cluster.... WTRG, G105, WRDU & Sunny 93.9, he contributed heavily on air, in production & with promitonal imagery. That, my friends, was 10 years ago. Since then, Doug has gained a lot of success as a PD in other markets. This man will win with this radio staton... by doing the format right. I just spent a weekend in Raleigh and listened only to Kix 102.9. To me, it sounded pretty damn good. Definitely the quality station Raleigh needs in this format. Just enough proven chartbusters mixed with a Carolina flavor we all know it needs to win. If the station doesn't jump dramtically in early next year, I'd be surprised.

I don't want to step on anyone's toes, but this station & this PD are a far, far cry from the insulting words I have heard on this board. I am not going to speculate too hard, but perhaps a jealous competitor is behind the raging? That be the case, those words sound like COMPLIMENTS.

Kix 102.9 is a winner if you ask me.

Happy holidays all!

What the poster said about the terms "Oldies" is correct... It means alot of different things to different people. Over the past 25 years or so, I have traveled the United States greatly and along the way heard MANY Oldies stations. Some were cookie cutter, playing the same 200 or so Oldies over and over again. However, there were (and are) some good ones out there playing large playlists. One of my all time favorites was WLKQ-FM Oldies Lake 102.3 in Buford/Lake Lanier Georgia. What made them special was that they were LIVE 24/7 and encouraged listeners to call in and make requests. And guess what? They actually PLAYED the songs (if they had them) and would soon get the song if they didn`t. They had a HUGE playlist. They played alot of rare Oldies like "Laurie Strange Things Happen" by Dickie Lee. They were successful for alot of years until the aging owner retired and sold out. I could go on and on... I still have alot of airchecks from these great Oldies stations. I bet WKIX-FM 102.9-Oldies sounds good. I wish that I could pick them up in the Triad. We really do need an Oldies station here. I sometimes CAN pick up WKIX-AM Channel 85 here (on a good day) and it sounds great!

Nice comments surfside (Dave). I think most of the insults were targeted at WKIX-AM, which is a blend of
MOR and traditional Oldies.

WTRG did sound it's best in your era!

KIX -AM & FM should both do WTRG ( Gee Curtis really owns both but.......wink) Get it in gear and get WTRG back as KIX

I thought I did the imaging at WTRG, 00-04 (etc etc...etc)? :0) Doug was part-time at WRDU.

* In fact, have done some specialty imaging for Y102 the last few years for Big John's show

Doug of course a rock star when he was OM/PD in Tallahassee...hiring me as VO for his the classic rock and then later when it flipped retaining me for the talk format.

WTRG rocked 'n rolled under Dave's guidance. Numbers were better before Corporate (Buddy Scott) came in and screwed with the music (Dave knew the market, knew that the station should slant R&B/Beach, plus the hits of course) ... and then saddled the station with John Boy & Billy after WRDU dumped them (due to sliding numbers) and picked up Bob and Tom. CC didnt' want WBBB to get JB&B, so parked them on WTRG.. SO ill-fitting. Three years JB&B were parked. Didn't get them removed til August 04. Too late by then. Of course Marc Chase didn't "get" the format. WTRG one of about eight stations throughout the SE that were flipped 2003-04. Now, the format is one of renewal due to it doing well in PPM.
