A question about WMAG

I admit I don't listen to WMAG very often (I live north of Raleigh so they don't come in very good all the time) but yesterday morning, or maybe it was the day before, around 11am, they played "Another One Bites The Dust" straight into "Oh Sheila." Perplexed at not hearing the usual easy-going workplace favorites I've grown accustomed to, I hung around for a commercial set, then the announcer said something about "WMAG helping you feel good at work" into a Shania Twain song, so I know they hadn't abandoned the workplace listenership completely.

Well today I flip by there once or twice and hear some Gloria Estefan, and again "Another One Bites the Dust." I don't know what else they played most of the day, I can usually only hear them in the car.

Have they tweaked their format to be the "feel good at work station" by throwing in a Queen song, or is there something else I just haven't caught up with yet?

I wasn't aware of any of this. I forget to listen to WMAG during the day, and obviously Delilah is not a representation of what they do.

Lite 102.9 in Charlotte has been doing this sort of thing, though they should really change the name. Of course, around here we have a station that is truly "Lite", but you all up there do not.

Is this "feel-good" theme a sign? The new 93.9 Kiss FM's slogan advertises "feel-good music," and its predecessor (Sunny 93.9) was Raleigh's counterpart to WMAG.

Speaking of 93.9 and Delilah, has anyone heard anything about whether or not another Raleigh station will pick her up?

maybe the suicide rate will die off a bit before then... ;D

and yes, with the format changes of 93.1 & 94.1 they've done some tweaking

I also have to add even a few days later that it was weird hearing "Another One Bites The Dust" described as "feel good at work music" and "Oh Sheila" seemed more like a "humping at work song" than a "feel good at work song" with all the uh-uh-uhs but what do I know? :-\

Dangit if I want to hear that I'll listen to Simon. ;D

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. WMAG has consistently been a leader in ratings and revenue in the Triad market. Carefull, my friends at CC. Don't kill the goose that lays some of the golden eggs!

speaking of Simon. anyone else surprised at how long that format has stuck around?

-i am.

btw, anyone else notice their signal? it's been weaker than normal out my way. it no longer sounds 'stereo' it's more muffled to the point where i never listen anymore.

Simon's been around longer than I think anyone expected it to. We had those years where the station went from Kiss to The Point to The Zone... I always said their next flip would be to "98.7 The Designated Area." Somehow Simon's managed to hold on. The question is, for how much longer?

I actually like Simon, but there's 99.3 WZAX from Rocky Mount that comes in clearer here and plays all kinds of stuff "Classic Top 40" they call it.

It's also weird that you get h u m p i n g blocked out when you type it.

I can't tell any difference except the guy who does the station IDs isn't as wacky any more.

That is weird. What is this, cwtv.com?

I remember that before 100.3 FM gave up AC for good, WMAG played "My Sharona".

ok, so..this morning around 5:50am I heard (of all things) Rickey Martin's - Livin' La Vida Loca, followed by Janet Jackson - Straight Up. after that it went into the morning show.

in between the songs, they did about a 30 second liner mentioning " a better variety of music from the 80's and 90's; with someone saying "i like the newer music, it fits my age..makes me go back to my highschool days" (obviously sounded like a 25-35 something year old.) at the end they said "the new 99.5 WMAG - The best of yesterday and today"

so...what is happening here?

Paula Abdul did "Straight Up" unless you're referring to another song. And WMAG has been doing that one for a while.
