In the fall of 1972, Channel 11 dropped Lawrence
Welk after 17 years on the station (16 on ABC,
one in syndication). He moved to Channel 2 and
stayed there until early 1981, when conflicts with
ABC sports programming (this is just after the switch)
caused WSB to give him up.
Now, granted, Welk had terrible demographics, but
Channel 11 held onto game shows like What's My Line?
and To Tell The Truth, which appealed to the same
audience.
So was it ratings? That's hard to believe. Was
it a scheduling conflict with 11's newfound commitment
to news in 1972?
Does anybody know the story behind this? I've been
trying to find out for over 30 years.
