Order has been restored to the universe! Radio legend & American Top 40 creator Casey Kasem is back on the airwaves of Las Vegas! He is presenting classic AT40 countdown shows from the 70's on KKLZ on Sundays, 7-10am & rebroadcast 8-10pm Sundays. If you are a CK fan like I am, check out what you may have missed when you were young! It's a blast, and it is great (in any format) to have Mr. Kasem back on the air in LV, one of the true radio talents from back in the day that can still draw people to the radio. Props to the 96.3 PD for bringing back a familiar voice that we sorely need to hear on our airwaves again.
 
My favorite thing about Classic AT40 is hearing all the songs that have never been played on the radio since the time they were currents. I love hearing all the obscure songs and artists, especially cheesy 70s pop, for example "Popcorn" by Hot Butter which I heard on a classic AT40 from 1972.

Here's a little Las Vegas AT40 history. The show originally aired on the old KFM-102 when they were an automated Top 40 station. When KFM switched formats to AOR in the late 1970s they kept running AT40 because they didn't want KLUC to steal it away. I can remember how strange it was to hear "Funkytown" by Lipps Inc on a station that normally played bands like AC/DC and Molly Hatchet.

KLUC aired a second-tier rival countdown called "Weekly Top 30" with host Mark Elliot. Also, on Sunday nights they ran a countdown called "The Great American Radio Show" which was hosted by Michael Harrison, yes the Talkers Magazine Michael Harrison back when he was with the old KMET/Los Angeles. It was a countdown of the R&R Rock chart and many of the songs sounded totally out of place on KLUC such as Pat Travers "Boom Boom Out Go The Lights" and Ted Nugent "Wango Tango"..those were KFM songs.

The last thing KFM aired before switching to Country on 1-1-81 was the AT40 for the year 1980. In and out of the countdown they ran sweepers teasing the format flip that said they have "grown up to be cowboys".

Sure enough, just as KFM had long predicted, KLUC started running AT40 as soon as it became available. KLUC was an AT40 affiliate the very next weekend.

hey, Jay, you remember anyone else from the old KMET "the mighty met"???? 94.7 was a FM station ahead of its time(being a native socal, I always prefered its rival KLOS 95.5, but respected "Paraquat Kelly, "Frtazier Smith", "Dr. Dememto", & others from that classic/innovative Southern California FM station). Very entertaining radio.
 
Speaking of old Vegas Top 40 trivia, does anyone remember a guy named Bill who called himself "The Wild Man" on KENO in the 70's?
 
Re: Bill, the "Wild Man"....don't know if I ever heard his real name, but there was a guy who did a total Wolman Jack rip-off for KENO-AM in the late 70's. I was at KORK, who was owned by Don Reynolds out of Arkansas..It bothered me that we couldn't completely dominate Vegas then, as Reynolds owned the top rated FM station (automated KORK-FM); a TV station (KORK, channel 3); a newspaper (Review-Journal); and all the billboards in town (DonRey Media). I thought we could at least trade out with each other and overwhelm anybody else publicity-wise, but we never did it.
