A RADIO STORY FEATURED BY MARY ONDRAKO

W-B man writes radio novel
A radio tale
An area radio veteran has penned a novel that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the radio business.
David S. Yonki of Wilkes-Barre is author of "A Radio Story: We Wish You Well in Your Future Endeavors," which traces the life and times of "Jake Yanick," a broadcast salesman, and the employment and moral challenges he faces. Yonki began writing the novel after he was injured in a car accident in 1999, he said.
"I believe this is a good story," Yonki said. He noted the book has a local flavor with several references to life in Northeast Pennsylvania.
Overall, Yonki said the book is a satirical, dramatic work that features humorous passages throughout. Those who were or are involved in radio could easily relate to the situations, he said. Yonki believes the book offers a unique perspective since it is about someone in sales rather than the typical on-air personalities. "It's about the guts of the business. A lot of people see the glamour, but nobody really sees the nitty gritty," he said. "I hope they enjoy the irony of it. I want them to have a greater appreciation for what it takes to be successful in radio."
A graduate of King's College and the former Career Academy of Broadcasting in Washington, D.C., Yonki was a volunteer at King's radio station, 88.5 WRKC-FM, and one of the first on-air personalities at 89.9 WVIA-FM in 1973. In 1995, he moved into radio sales and has also been employed by newspapers and television stations and in public relations.
The book is available at Barnes and Noble, Tudor Book stores and the KRZ Web site. Yonki will appear at Tudor Book Shop and Cafe, Kingston, on Aug. 6 from 2 to 3 p.m. and Barnes and Noble, Wilkes-Barre Township, on Aug. 20 at 2 p.m.

Is this word-for-word right from the article? Did she actually plug "the KRZ website", and NOT give the address??

Ooof!

> To be fair to Mary, I was the one who gave her the information
and I neglected to give her the web address and tell her that
while it was on the KRZ site, it was on Shadoe Steele's page
where we are offering a combo book cd deal. The book and the
complete interview with me that aired on his program on July second
is on sale at his site.
Mary was a pleasure to talk to. We were kind of rushed because she
had a deadline and I was doing the interview from work on a break.

I don't know if she interviewed you before or after she talked to me, but I had to talk talk talk to get her interested in plugging the book. She thought it was just for radio insiders and I said, "I think lots of people around here are into radio." She thought I was your flak. It turned out nicely and will be on the RHV Wednesday morning.

She interviewed me on Wednesday and was up against deadline.
I appreciate your flaking for me. Radio people need all the
flacking they can get. I appreciate your efforts and yes, you are
a guy!!!!!!!!!! But one thing I'm not clear on, did you interview
her on the RHV for the book specifically or was she participating in
the show? Either way, I appreciate your help and underground
support there. Anyway I can get a copy of the interview?

I originally called her to see if she was doing anything about WNAK. If so, I would not mention it in my column. Then The Yonk's book came up and I pushed it, as he was one of the early voices on the RHV and we Visitor people gotta stick together. He helped me in the beginning and I don't forget people.

There was no interview. I'm just going to read her column to my listeners. They grew up on Valley radio and were always in touch with it. They might be interested in a book like this; you never know.
______________

Great!!! Thank you for that help. It is very much appreciated.
By the way, I won't need a tape. I'll set a timer at home.

Can't tell you when it will be on, but I'll try hard for :25 into the show. Ron Labatch will be the reader; he's already put it on disc when he came in this morning to do a bunch of cuts for tonight's recording.
______________

I've always been of the opinion that Mary is somewhat of an idiot. Some of her columns have been absolute drivel and she's been totally out of touch on some staffing and personnel issues. I much preferred Sue Henry's take on that column, although I don't care for her on the air.
Having said that, YONK---I LOOKED ALL OVER BARNES AND NOBLE THIS MORNING AND COULDN'T FIND YOUR BOOK ANYWHERE!!! WHERE DO THEY HAVE IT?????????
