Part One................
Rose had bought WBAM and was known for community involvement, willingness to try something new and exaggerating the number of people who came out for his live events. Jake introduced himself and Rose said, “Say boy, I need a man like you. Want to pass out free records to the people coming through the door?” Jake, looking at the huge sign, the sandy haired man talking into the microphone and Red’s beaming face, jumped at the chance. His job was to hand out free 45s to the shopping public. As the masses came through the door, there was Jake handing out a freebie compliments of the Boys from BAM. The grade school boy noticed the change of attitude of the shoppers as they walked by the BAM desk. Looking grim and determined to eke out a few luxuries as they passed through the doors, a smile came to their faces when they saw the broadcast sign. When he handed them something for nothing, even a beat up record by someone they never heard of, their eyes brightened. A girl a grade behind Jake saw him handing out the 45s and squealed to her mother, “Mommy that’s Jake Yanick, he’s in my school. He works with the radio”. The buzz and excitement was something he had not seen in his young life. Just when he thought it couldn’t get any better, Red called him over to meet Johnny Ashgash, the Polka king heard mornings on WBAM. As Jake stood in front of them, he heard Ashgash speak into the microphone, “Now ladies and gentlemen, let’s welcome one of the youngest boys from ‘BAM, Jake Yanick. Jake, say a few words to our audience”. The boy was dumbstruck. He started to sweat and panic. He looked at the professional duo and for a split second wondered what to say. After what seemed like an eternity, Jake began, “I’m proud to be here with the boys from ‘BAM today. Come on down, do your food shopping and stop by and get a free gift from us, the boys from BAM.” When he gave the mike back to the two men, he could see he made a huge impression. After he got off the air, Red told Jake he had done very well and even gave him an extra 45 to take home.
