Clear Channel's sports-talk "1320 WAMR, The Whammer" in Sarasota, FL just shifted to "1320 The Dove" with a nostalgia format. This station was a "Music Of Your Life" affiliate back in the '80s.

A couple years back, longtime nostalgia station WCMC from Wildwood, NJ flipped to oldies. Protests formed outside the station, and they actually flipped back!
Around the same time, longtime nostalgia station WLAN-AM in Lancaster, PA flipped to sports talk. About a year later, they got a new GM who heeded to the many protests, and helped flip back the station.
It's encouraging to see these rare cases, but remember, these are a handful of positive and surprising moves in a world of multitudes of these stations dying.

KKGO 1260 (formerly KSUR) in Los Angeles has just returned to Standards after a 10 month flirtation with 50's & 60's oldies. The station simulcasts in San Diego on 540 via a transmitter in Tijuana.

A couple weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon, I visited relatives within the listening range of WOBM in Lakewood NJ, and had the opportunity to listen to you at a poolside barbecue. Nothing was more relaxing. It was a treat for me since I have no such station in my immediate area. But whenever I have this format on, I’m always amazed at the number of people who want to know what that station is, and wish they had one like it to listen to all the time. (These are people in their 40s, too).

That's kind of you to say. I don't want to take advantage of this forum to be too much of a cheerleader for WW1 just because I work there

I agree...Nick, you do a wonderful job, and the group of people who I am hearing the most from these days--is the 40-somethings! I've lost count of the calls I've gotten in the past several weeks.
I know WW1 took an awful lot of flack for dropping the 40s and 50s MOR a few years ago, but Nick is right...you can't hear the music they're now playing anywhere else.
That said, I'm toying with the idea of a weekly music segment spotlighting those "forgotten" songs...by Frankie Laine, Doris Day, the Mills Brothers, and the like...and things like "Music Box Dancer," "Watching Scotty Grow," and "Daisy A Day." These wouldn't stand the strain of regular rotation, but they were locally HUGE hits, and placed strategically once in awhile, they could do wonders!
Funny to note: I just got off the phone awhile ago with a listener who *really* wants to hear "Time To Say Goodbye" by Sarah Brightman/Andrea Bocelli again. This was one that Westwood One really put on the map, and was a mainstay throughout 2002, but fell away over time.
I work at WRIG in Wausau, WI, and back in 2003, the management flipped us from the WW1-AS format (which we had been on since 1993) to Hot Talk/Sports. Not only did our numbers and sales plummet, but we had MAJOR listener protests. We flipped it back (thankfully!) in January, 2004. Fortunately, I was asked to come back to the Morning Show, and I had kept all of my music (like the Brightman/Bocelli song). So, we'll be happy to play that one for her tomorrow morning!
For listeners, please call your local Standards station (no matter if it's WW1 or not) to voice your approval, and send letters for their Public File. Get all of your friends to do so, too. And, patronize the advertisers, telling them where you heard their ads!
For Nick, keep up the great work! It's a pleasure to be an affiliate!
