I have tuned in to Wild 102.7 yesterday, with my smartphone plugged into my car stereo jack while driving along the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) in New York City.
I like the variety of sounds that are going on in there with a mixture of current and recent along with the remixes of artists mainly known for other styles of music (such as R&B for one). The station has a promising start going for it and I do hope that they do well. Yet, I think it's time that we have to "come down to Earth" on certain things because while this station has a promising start, we also have to be realisitic about things as well.
1) This station is NOT the "second coming of Christ". No radio station is. I was very happy when Pulse '87 launched in New York in 2008 and felt a sigh of relief when PartyFM came into that 87.7 frequency in November '09 after Pulse's financial issues. But still I also realize that this is just a FM radio station. There were certain things formatically that I did and did not like. Then again, it's not about what I like but what revenues would generate into these stations. That's why radio is a business. Granted, for the dance music community we don't have much on terrestrial radio, which is why you see the enthusiasm as you do when a dance/rhythmic station launches. Yet still, it is a radio station and bottom line, they have to get to the marketplace in terms of ad sales for a station (any station).
2) It doesn't matter what us New Yorkers or Philly people think. While we may enjoy the station upon our visits to Atlantic City, the bottom line comes down to the direct market that this station serves because no matter how good the station sounds, the people that are going to impact it are carrying the PPM meters in places like Brigantine, Absecon, Pleasantville, Ventnor City, Margate City, Northfield, Egg Harbor Township, and yes Atlantic City. If the shares are good based on those PPM's from those areas, that will determine Wild (or any radio station's) existence based on such numbers and future ad billings. Those from outside of the region don't make that direct impact.
3) Rock fans, we feel ya. Any change of a format on a radio station certainly impacts the fan base that such a station serves. And while I can understand how angry the rock fans may feel about what had occurred, I hold nothing against any fan of any music that gets impacted like that. You have EVERY right to express your anger and your hurt, so as long as you keep it about the music you love, or even "hate" on the music that has taken over such a station, but not attack those who are part of the target audience that the new format is serving. Likewise, those that are part of the audience with the new format should not attack those who lost their station.
Saying that I wish Wild 102.7 the very best! Likewise, if another station in the market does a rock format similar to 'JSE then I'm happy for the fans of that music as well.
I know this probably is the 234,352,109th thread on Wild in the past few days, lol
. I do believe the station has a promising start. But it is still a radio station. It isn't going to stop the oil leaking in the Gulf. It will not solve the economy. It will not help get LeBron James over to the Knicks, Nets or Sixers. It's what it is...a station playing music to a certain group that they can "bank" on in terms of keeping the company running it in business.
Thank you,
