A refreshing Power

Hello all my fellow radio enthusiasts! I will have to agree Power is sounding very refreshing to the ear as opposed to the beats predictability! Yes I understand this a hispanic market but lets not just focus on the hispanic community because san antonio has other diverse cultures! The thing about the beat is that ALL they primarily focus on is HISPANICS and all their on air staff except one individual is HISPANIC! NEWSFLASH......HIP HOP is not HISPANIC! Romeo knows nothing about HIP HOP he justs wants you to think so! None of their jocks really do either besides valencia! and what is this Nikki girl doing on the air AKA cathy! I know all the ins and outs of the beat and their time is up! you cant just go to the black community for a spurs game to park your station vehicle and martin luther king day! As for Power I think Doug Bennett knows what hes doing hes just being smart using cox's strategy! The one thing I hope Power do is hire an on air staff who knows nothing about hiphop or the culture at all. People such as FABIAN from the Jammin morning show are trying to go to Power and FABIAN is a joke whos thinks he knows hip hop but doesnt at ALL he puts on a front! hope to hear your replies ;D

OKAY I WAS TRYING TO UNDERSTAND YOU UNTIL YOU GOT TO HERE...IS THIS A TYPO???

ALTHOUGH YOU MIGHT BE RIGHT ABOUT FABIEN.... HE IS MORE HIPHOP THAN ROMEO OR NIKKI

BUT THEN AGAIN...WHO CARES...LETS JUST HOPE COX PULLS THROUGH AND GIVES THE BEAT A REAL COMPETITOR. I AM SURE THEY WILL.....

Sorry deejay05 it was a typo. what i was trying to imply was i hope they DONT hire individuals who dont know about hiphop ;D

so correct me if i'm wrong but you are saying that just because we are hispanic...we don't know anything about hip hop, the format, the culture, etc?

First off radiofmam....Hip Hop is not a color or race...it is a CULTURE. Secondly, San Antonio is 50% hispanic...that means 1 out of every 2 people in SA are...(drumroll please)HISPANIC! This is a HISPANIC market and you must program to the market...BTW...thanks for the shout out!! :D

First off Romeo I know its a hispanic market!Secondly I know hip hop is not limited to one race though it seems you dont want to recognize the black community! So dont front! you need to know more my friend besides TRL and Rap city you and your girl cathy!

I mean no disrespect to you radiofmam. How much do you really know about hip hop and this city and of course about radio? Curious.

OKAYYYYYYYY

THIS IS GETTING STUPID....

WHAT HE IS TRYING TO SAY IS THAT THE BEAT SEEMS TO ONLY CARE ABOUT HISPANICS AND NOT THE OTHER DIVERSE CULTURES IN SAN ANTONIO....

TO HIS DEFENSE..THE BEATS JOCKS DO NOT HAVE A GREAT KNOWLEDGE OF HIPHOP OR DRIVE THE HIPHOP SCENE IN SAN ANTONIO. REMEMBER MOST OF THEM WERE ROOKIES, RADIO REJECTS, OR CASTAWAYS FROM OTHER STATIONS AT THE TIME THE BEAT WAS CONCEIVED IN THE MARKET. MANY OF THE JOCKS AND STAFF HAVE GROWN INTOTHE LIFESTYLE OF HIPHOP BUT REALLY ARE NOT IT.

TO THE BEATS DEFENSE...THE BEAT HELP DRIVE HIPHOP INTO MAINSTREAM SAN ANTONIO. IT ALSO PROVED A HIPHOP STATION COULD BE #1 AND BILL #1....TO THEIR CREDIT NOW THEY HAVE REAL COMPETITION IN POWER...BEING FIRST IS ALWAYS THE HARDEST.

MY OPINION- THE BEAT HAS UNDERSERVED THEIR LISTENERS....AT THIS POINT THEY WILL NOT BE ABLE TO BE AS CREATIVE AS THEY COULD BE AND THEY HAVE TO TIGHTEN THIER BELTS IF THEY PLAN TO SURVIVE POWER....THE BEAT LIKE KTFM HAS MANY WEAKNESSES...ACTUALLY MORE...POWER WILL EXPLOIT ALL OF THESE WEAKNESSES...THE BEAT HAS NO CHOICE BUT TO DEFEND THE HILL THEY ARE ON....THEY WILL HAVE TO KEEP ALL LISTENERS IN MIND..BLACK, WHITE, ASAIN, AND HISPANIC...YOUNG AND OLD, RICH AND POOR......

SOME OF THE BEAT JOCKS ARE BLAND, BUT THATS ALL WEVE HAD.....HOPEFULLY POWER WILL BRING IN SOME POWERFUL TALENT..HAHAHA! THE BEAT MIGHT REMAIN THE TOP HIPHOP STATION IN SA, BUT THE DAYS OF 9 SHARE ARE OVER!!!! SELLING #1 WONT BE A LUXURY ANYMORE...THEY WILL HAVE TO CARE ABOUT THEIR LISTENERS AND ADVERTISERS......

And The Beat goes on.......

It's kinda funny that some of you people think Cox Radio is going to invest some real money in Power. Granted, it's a possibility but I don't see it happening. Cox has never invested money on 106.7 and their not going to start now. The Beat will prevail.

One question remains, why does The Beat need to change? Cause Power is here....ummm,so what? 3 month from now The Beat will still be at the Top and Power will be somewhere in the Top 10. This market can and will support both stations. Any possibiltiy another Top 40 station pops up?

To bennieben55 I know tons about hip hop I live and breathe the music and for your information if you may know I have 15 plus years in the industry! I believe you have several years also from you being in promotions at kono and being at the old ktfm! my main point everyone is that beat doesnt go to great lengths to serve what we know as hip hop as DEEJAY05 said they just do what they have to in order to serve enough to get by in this market because there was never a competitor! now they are going to have to do something called work! Yes as I said before I know this is a market of mostly hispanics but I dont see how a station playing nb ridaz, lil rob,etc all the time can really be considered hip hop! 8)

wait...is that? it is? BROWN BOY's "SUPERMAN" playing on POWER...is that in your definition of HIP HOP 'radiofmam'?? Cuz it is in mine...so is NB Ridaz, Lil Rob, Mr Sancho, Jibbs, Lil Scrappy....if it's what the listeners tell us is HIP HOP....then it is HIP HOP!

yeh but does 100% of the hispanics listen to hip hop? Most of my hispanic firends are into punk rock, metal, and country. BTW I am half hispanic so you probably want to add 1/2 to that percentage.

Okay, I respect the fact that you have knowledge of the industry and that you live and breath hip hop. I just wanted to know that you are knowledgable. We have these cats that like talking alot of stuff but have no real life experience. You know what I mean. I am even surprised that you know that I worked for the old KTFM and Kono, let me also add that I was a dj for 10 years ( you know spinning records for parties, debut,etc...... all over the city and other cities.) I grew up listening to hip hop and live it. Now I agree to a certain extent about the music being played. I have heard the stations in houston, dallas atlanta, new york and washington dc. Those stations too me are true Hip Hop stations, but understand that SA is not one of those cities. If SA was like any of those cities then the old KSJL would have made a dent in the ratings and the station would have remained on fm. That station in my mind would have been considered an urban/hip hop station. This city doesn't have enough listeners that like the hip hop that some of us consider true. You can't force a city to like what they don't really know. So play what they do know from watching MTV,VH1,etc...... That is how a station wins . It will be interesting when Power has their jocks in place. Let's see who sounds better. Remember Power also has to listen to what the listeners want to hear in this market. It is a fact. Peace!!!!!!!

Here is a simple explaination on why Power will suck. Their PD. They need a real person who knows what the hell they are doing. They need someone who knows the music. DB? Well his history speaks for itself. Jamz, Z, and now Power.

WHAT? HIP HOP IS NOT HISPANIC! ARE U KIDDING ME! HIP HOP IS NOT BLACK EITHER OR ANY RACE FOR THAT MATTER. IT'S A CULTURE, A WAY OF LIVING ...YEAH I CAN'T STAND HEARING BROWN BOY OR ANY OTHER WACK HIP HOP FOR THAT MATTER LIKE THE LAFFY TAFFY'S, CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP ECT..... BUT ARE THOSE SONGS CONSIDERED HIP HOP B/C BLACK PEOPLE MADE THEM? I THINK NOT. HIP HOP HAS EVOLVED FROM THE BEGINING, FROM SUGAR HILL GANG TO GRAND MASTER FLASH AND THE FURIOUS FIVE, KOOL G RAP , ERIC B. & RAKIM, KRS-1, LL COOL J , NWA, BIGGIE, PAC , EMINEM, JAY-Z, NAS, OUT KAST.....ECT. ECT. ECT. ALL THE MUSIC SINCE THE BEGINING AS EVOLVED TO WHAT WE HEAR NOW......... HELL YEAH I LOVE THE OLD SCHOOL THE CONSCIENCE HIP HOP, THE HIP HOP THAT TELLS A STORY...THAT'S THE REAL SHIT. BUT BACK TO REALITY............THAT STUFF DOES NOT WORK HERE IN S.A...... S.A. DIDN'T GROW UP ON HIP HOP....... WELL, AT LEAST THE DEMO THE STATIONS ARE GOING AFTER DIDN'T. WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT THE BEAT INTRODUCED SOME FORM OF HIP HOP TO SA....... AND I GIVE THEM THAT......... IT COULD OF BEEN WORSE WE COULD OF STILL BEEN LISTENING TO THE BRITTNEY'S, BACKSTREET BOYS, AND ALL THAT REAL WACK SHIT..... BTW ASK ANY HIP HOP PIONEER ABOUT HISPANIC'S BEING APART OF HIP HOP B/C YOUR HISTORY NEEDS TO BE CHECKED....... ALSO SHOULD I CALL L.U.L.A.C (THE NAACP FOR HISPANICS) B/C LAST TIME I CHECKED B.E.T. MEANT BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION............... SO STOP BITCHING......NOW WE HAVE 2 STATIONS THAT WILL BURNOUT THE MUSIC.

So how do you explain romeo from the beat? Its a long way from tejano!

do i need to call it now....

the beat is going to stay where they are..they will remain a top 10 station maybe top 5 if they dont do anything drastic. Power will come and and take or duplicate some of thier listeners and definetaly take some of the the beats advertisers........

Romeo, if thats your idea of hiphop then you will have a problem. i am sure you are being mandated by your pd, regional vp, format rvp to tighten up your list.....anyone can hear that in your sunday pocos perro locos show.....you know a radio war costs money.....we know cox is cheap but univision is just a cheap! its easy to program the #1 and i give you credit for being here from the start......paving the road here in san antonio again for hiphop but.......i think you should spend less time posting and more time figuring out how to stay #1 since your the apd...we all know your pd cant handle it!

average listener,
sounds like the beats playlist....lmao!
i feel what you are saying on the hip hop tip.....

To answer your question deejay05. I was on air as a fill in on overnights, I also was part of party patrol with JOEY D, STEVE CHAVEZ and then finally DMAQ. I was on the air with DMAQ more times that with the others. I was also on the air several times on KTSA with Eliza. I did start off as a board-op but them became a technical director. Remember board-op's usually do not get to be on the air. Thanks for asking.

Romeo sounds so ignorant dont we all agree? I mean he still doesnt get my point and he always evades my question as to why the beat only does stuff in the black community during spurs games, and 1 tour, and mlk day! we all know they have no real intention of getting involved with the black community or any other unless they are HISPANIC!But let it be diez y seis or fiesta they will be there mandatory! And Romeo by the way ask most people about what you say is hip hop and get made a fool of! ;D

So what you're saying is that an order for The Beat to be considered a true Hip Hop station, they should be involved in the Black community? Ummm ok.

I think what you don't realize radiofmam, is that S.A. is about 55% Hispanic. The Beat and it's sister stations are geared towards the Hispanic community. Just like Radio One is to the Black community. If you listen often enough you'll know that The Beat has been to east side on several occassions. Perhaps, not as often but that's possibly because the east side is not as populated as other parts of the city.

Out of curiosity radiofmam, do you jump on Radio One for not investing more time in the Hispanic or Anglo communities in other markets?

So what you're saying is that an order for The Beat to be considered a true Hip Hop station, they should be involved in the Black community? Ummm ok.
To saradio1..... yes i am saying you must get involved with the black community especially when 80 percent of the artists you are playing ARE black!
