A replacement for Rush???

Heard that a guy in Atlanta named Chris Krok is being shipped around to about 5 different stations over several years to learn the Talk Radio biz so he can replace Rush on a national basis. Anybody else heard this?

It's a crowded field, but the worst radio host in Madison during the decade or so I have been writing this column was probably Chris Krok, who spent about three years here (2001-2004) on WTDY/AM 1670.

Krok spent most of his time trying to call attention to himself by being outrageous. In 2004 he failed upward to a station in the Twin Cities, and recently failed upward again to another station in Atlanta, WSB/AM, where he handles the late night shift. ...

Nope. Makes no sense.

Clear Channel/Premiere Radio Networks already has a bunch of hosts in their stable who have proven track records in their respective markets, and who already know the Talk Radio biz. Why grab some guy nobody ever heard of and who needs on the job training?

And nobody can "replace" Rush. It's the Rush Limbaugh Show. When he leaves, there is no show. Premiere can put another show in the time-slot but it's another show, it's not somebody replacing Rush - any more than whenever Rush changes stations in a market somebody "replaces" him on the station he left. But if you don't believe me on this, just ask David Lee Roth.

I disagree, when Rush leaves the scene there will nothing like the 80% ratings lost that followed the departure of Howard Stern.

Whoever, replaces Rush will probably get 80% of Rush's ratings in the next book

The following scenarios are likely

  • Hannity will change his time period to 9a-12p et
  • Beck will be relaunched by Premiere in that time period
  • Premiere will try several of Rush's fill-ins like Roger Hedgecock or Walter Williams

I've heard Chris Krok. He used to be on a nearby station here (WTDY). Trust me, he doesn't have the chops to be groomed for anything. He basically sucks.

When you put it that way, somebody has already replaced Rush....
  • In Minneapolis
  • In Pittsburgh
  • In Baltimore
  • In Wilmington
That just off the top of my head. Probably more have replaced Rush.
Hannity is not syndicated by Premiere. ABC/Citadel may make a move, whatever Premiere decides to do.
Correction: Rush's time period is 12pm to 3pm ET. Beck currently does 9am to 12pm. Hannity does 3pm to 6pm.

Rush has already found a new station in each of these markets

KTLK-FM in Minneapolis
WPGB in Pittsburgh
WCBM in Baltimore
Don't know whether you are referring to Wilmington, NC or Wilmington, DE
No problem... Rush has affiliates in each market

WILM in Wilmington, DE
WAAV in Wilmington, NC

I never said that Hannity was syndicated by Premiere.

I missed this one. He's on at 9a-12 noon here on the left coast.

My prediction would be that Beck would get "promoted" to Rush's slot, but I'm not sure that will happen now that he's changed tones from being a wacky morning show with a conservative slant to being a prophet of the End Times. He'd make a better replacement for Dr. Gene Scott with the direction his show's been going.

If Rush retires after Inauguration Day 2009, I'd expect former regular fill-in Tony Snow to get the nod. His current high profile position as Bush's press secretary is certainly increasing his Q rating.

Wilmington, Delaware. Ironically, WILM drew national attention a decade ago (before Clear Channel bought it) by being the first station - ever - to drop Rush. The PD who dropped Rush, left WILM after Clear Channel took over and went to a local competitor; he is now one of Rush's "replacements" (and competition) on his former station (WDEL).

Yes. But someone did replace him on each station he left. I haven't checked each of those markets, but I understand at least a couple of the "replacements" are doing well against him.

We are starting to see some stations going back to more local talk programming. When Rush steps down, he may have lots of replacements. Each Clear Channel station is a profit center. If local management decides they can make more money for the company but going local 12pm to 3pm (Eastern) and not taking whatever show Premiere Radio puts if that time slot (it any), even Clear Channel stations will go local.

Rush suffers from the same problem as the rest of talk radio: Old demos. And they are getting older.

That would be nice but it's not true. In the last five years we've seen the number of local hosts shrink from 30% to 15% of the talk radio universe. Rush has a record of 540 affiliates. There are some markets where you can here El Rushbo on five stations if you have good radio.
