A River finally running through Needham

Besides the Charles.

The 96.5 in Needham, // WXRV, is on the air acc to Garrett at boston-radio-interest

>>But put that together with our report last week that WXRV is pursuing its 2003 application for a 96.5 translator in Needham, and we’ve got to wonder whether something bigger might be afoot: could the laid-back AAA of “The River” evolve into a modern rock reincarnation of WFNX, either on the main 92.5 signal or perhaps on the translator if it’s ever granted? We’ll be watching closely.

That refers to them getting the WFNX calls, now in Athol I believe...

4 mile SE of Codman and 6 mile S of Jones there's not even a fringey/picket-fency trace of The River, assuming it is even on the air

"The River" translator is on the air, I was in its area today. Sure enough, the Caribbean pirate in (I think) Mattapan begins to chop it up even in the Chestnut Hill section of Newton, just a few miles east of the "River" translator transmitter near the Newton/Needham line. I'm sure this pirate cuts it out most anywhere within the City of Boston.

Also, audio quality on the translator was poor even where the signal was good. Low modulation, some distortion, and the audio was briefly cutting out at times, sounding like whatever they were using for a feed or link from the parent station was intermittent, or if was receiving an on-air signal, it may have been occasionally falling below a certain strength threshold at the translator receiver or demodulator.

At my apartment on the southwest facing side of Spring Hill in Somerville, I can faintly hear the "River" translator if I do some antenna acrobatics to find a spot that "nulls out" the pirate.

Is it even legal for this translator to be on the air?

I've been able to get a faint signal in the Bedford/Lexington area. 96.5 WMLL "The Mill" from Manchester N.H. is now unlistenable because of significant interference from the translator. Their audio quality sounds muffled or something. Could a format change on 925 WXRV be happening in the not-so-distant future?

FCC approved as far as I know...short spacing that's putting some new translators or LPFMS on or near established station frequences. The idea here is that WMLL is supposed to serve Manchester & southern NH and they shoehorned in the WXRV // at 96.5 so those who were fans of the Mill in Bedford or Lexington are out of luck. WXOJ LP is at 94.9 in Salisbury, same freq as WHOM and there are spots where WHOM is blotted out, or the stations go back and forth depending on where you are till finally WXOJ abruptly fades away.

Am temp. up in Burlington VT and there's an LPFM up here WOMM LP 105.9 the Radiator but I think across the lake in Plattsburgh there's another station on that freq...WOMM's power is enough to reach the city of Burl and into adjacent Colchester and Winooski but apparently far enough away from the Plattsburgh 105.9 to exist.

Years ago WMWM used to be on and off because DJs came and went during the day, and no automation. Someone in Salem
was a fan of WUMB next to us and hated it when we turned our transmitter back on. He said he wanted "91.9 not 91.7" and we had to tell him we were a legit licensed station that had been on years before WUMB and this was our territory. WUMB gets a bit of revenge though...if you head N of Salem, etc. their WNEF 91.7 Newburyport soon takes over, and also you can still get WUMB fairly close to Salem State, but maybe with some interference. This is what's going on with short spacing.

Add to that the pirates who cause interference to the legit stations like one that is wiping out WMWM's western fringe. And the one Eli speaks of that is interfering with the new WXRV translator. Sometimes it'[s tough to even find a freq to broadcast the XM or Sirius signal to your own car (or playing an mp3 player ditto). So many stations, then throw in pirates.

Boy, 96.5 Is Gonna Be Busy!

Heh! Well guess what?
W243DC (the Needham station) is just 10 watts and (as you’d likely agree) it pops in & out up here in Beverly.
And, if you look in the FCC database, you will see that the Lynn School Committee has a CP for WVUL-LP, a 100 watt translator for 96.5!
