A Salute To '60s AM Radio

XM satellite radio salutes some of the great '60s AM stations every Friday on XM channel 6. The show airs 4-9 p.m. eastern time. Sounds like a good show. Here's the promo:

"60's on 6 "Sonic Sound Salutes" highlights great '60s radio stations from across America. Terry "Motormouth" Young transforms the '60s on 6 into these great AM radio stations every Friday 4-9pm eastern time. Hear the stations jingles, air personalities, and local happenings. The way it was is the way it is."

He has many of those for sale on CD, with the exception of some of the repeats.

Some months back, they ran an evening of "KOIL, Omaha," of which I and some others are familiar. True, he used the music of the KOIL era, and true, he used many of the KOIL jingles. BUT that's where the similarity ended. Not being from around here, he "moidered" the sound of the station. It was simply some guy saying "KOIL" a lot without making it truly Omaha-oriented. (At least the part I heard, reinforced by what other locals told me.)

We had hoped for any of the KOIL Good Guys from the era to host the show...or to hear a true aircheck from the period. Instead, it was a recreation by somebody who, sadly, knew little of the station or region.

I hope the bigger stations from bigger markets get better coverage. This is a great idea but needs better prep and execution than Omaha got.

Well, I don't know about that one, but he usually uses airchecks from the station, all scoped or short segments, of course, but he does use them. I'll have to dig out the KOIL show and check it out. There were a few shows when he started doing this where he didn't use airchecks, but everyone I've heard since then has used them. I have almost all of the shows except for some of the repeats.

Could be. I heard only about 45 minutes of the multi-hour presentation that night (but was supported by some other locals who apparently heard other segments). What I heard was nothing special (but then again, I have copies of the KOIL jingles and can listen to them anytime I want). Moreover, I recall his mispronouncing things, stumbling over things, and seemingly (to me) not being well-prepared. Perhaps the other hours were better.
