Veteran air personalities Pat Garrett, Hoyle Dempsey and Dave Murphy were released today by Cumulus/Savannah, GA, as Classic Hits WTYB (Cool 103.9) shifts to all-Christmas music ahead of a Dec. 26 format change. Garrett was also PD of Cool 103.9.

I wonder what would make them more money than being an oldies station with some indirect competition from three formats?

Damn.

Another terrible move. If they had marketed properly and actually let people know that they exist, Cool had the potential, what with WGCO's equally idiotic flip to JackFM, to pick up a ton of listeners who were looking for their Oldies. Nope...let's blow it up. I really would like to know what the hell they were thinking, because this is just mind-bogglingly stupid.

Now I guess the question is what they will be flipping to. Honestly, the only glaring format hole in the market was being filled by their previous format. I'm stumped here, folks.

And I had just seen a Cool 103.9 station van for the first time ever on Thursday! LOL

It's amazing how Oldies can go from being considered a viable format to "dead" in one year. And radio management's reputation for lemming-like behavior continues.

It's like watching a bad train wreck. And then just for good measure, several cars and an airplane collide into the train wreck. Goodness knows what exactly the cloud people suits are thinking. I can't even think of a format they can use , especially on that signal. Alternative? Sure, I'd listen. Air America Radio/progressive talk? Yeah, I'd listen to that, too. Who knows? I guess we'll all find out next Monday when Cumulus deems it time to spin the...

That's rich, man! A "true" alternative (a la Area 108 in L.V. or the Edge in Phoenix) might work, and that would slice Wave's meager Savannah listenership some more. Rock might take a slight hit as well. More than likely, I'd place a fiver on FM Black Gospel. Having an FM gospel station would be a winner, IMHO.

I would love to see an alt. rocker here, though. Rock 106-1 needs some competition.

As was said, you never know what Cumulus has up its sleeve...

Thanks for acknowledging our stations misfortune! I can only tell you that it came from corporate and not at the local level. There are some fine people that work at Cumulus/Savannah. Hoyle, Dave and myself enjoyed working with them for the last year and a half.

If you're shocked at the fact that they blew up COOL 103.9, I can't wait to see your posts next week after the flip!

For me, the way I look at it is, there are better things ahead!

Merry Christmas everybody!

CUMULESS IS RUN BY A MADMAN NAMED JOHN DICKEY THAT JUST LIKES TO SELF-DESTRUCT HIS OWN COMPANY BY MAKING STUPID FORMAT DECISIONS. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT FORMAT WILL REPLACE THE OLDIES THAT WERE ON 103.9. I GUARANTEE THAT WE'LL ALL GET A GOOD LAUGH OUT OF IT. GOOD LUCK TO HOYLE, PAT, AND DAVE. THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE AND DIDN'T DESERVE TO BE TREATED LIKE CRAP. YOU GUYS WERE TOO GOOD FOR THAT PLACE ANYWAY.

LOUD NOISES! I DON'T KNOW WHAT WE'RE YELLING ABOUT!!!

well well well

Dumb move changing formats but no surprise. As far as the jocks, nice Christmas present, no one deserves that! But the PD of Cool, once the OM, the terminator of many once employed, you reap what you sew, corporate decision or not!

Say what you will, but anyone that I released was a justified move. Looking back, I would do it all over again. In case you didn't know, it's part of the job as an OM or PD to do what's best for the growth of the station. Personally, I only let two people go during the entire time I was there. The PD's fired several others at one time or another during that same period, again, justified. Some people that were let go were targeted long before my arrival. There were several that chose the path of trying to undermine our progress and would not accept change. Judging by the tone of your post, you were probably one of those. No offense.
Edited by Pat Garrett on 12/19/05 12:04 AM.

Re: well well well

Work for cumulus? never would I make that mistake but I knew those who did. Justify means to prove or show just, right or reasonable; none of which describes the decisions made to terminate their employment. And it's interesting that you chose to use the word "targeted," that's closer to the truth. No offense taken.

My condolences...

I do feel sorry for those let go by Cumulus. Hopefully Pat didn't take any offense towards my remark about the station. I think, despite the fact that Cool would have increased in ratings significantly, it must have been making less money than the "cloud suits" wanted. I hope all of the folks let go by Cool will find jobs soon.

P.S., Pat: I'm sure you cannot give specifics about the new format, but can you drop any hints for enquiring minds?

Cheers and good luck,

Like I indicated, this station never had a chance. There was absolutely no corporate support and the sales support was almost non-existant. But look at it from an advertisers point of view, the signal was just too unreliable and irratic. Too bad, because it could have delivered some decent numbers with the power increase.

As for the new format, perhaps "thecommish" below is on to something. Just what the market needs....another Urban station! Wait and see.

Blazin 103.9 wouldn't surprise me.Cumulus likes that name and format. That's what happened to their 50 kw.oldies station in Tallahassee.

WTF?! They tried Urban AC as Kiss 104 for six years (97-2003), then when Clear Channel made noise about them using their KISS name, they repositioned to V103.9. So now they're going to go back to the format that they never succeeded at, back to being a station that will, much like its previous incarnations, Kiss 104 and V103.9, continute to get dominated by Clear Channel's Urban AC WLVH - Love 101.1 ?! The mind boggles....
Edited by FilmCritic3000 on 12/19/05 11:48 PM.

How about a sports format, such as "103-9 The Fan, The Coastal Empire's only 24/7 Sports FM?" After all, Savannah is one of the largest Arbitron-rated markets in the nation not to have a full time sports station.

It was tried on 104.7 and no one noticed. If Cumulus puts an Urban AC on 103.9, their stupidity will have reached levels unknown. It's sad and aggravating to see them continue to just throw money down the drain.
