A sign for dance music to come back??

I just heard on KRBE a while ago, the return of the beat at the roxy, anyone know what thats all about? Could KRBE be finaly switching back to a great mixshow over the weekends? I forgot what name they said the dj is, its not mark d though, but hopefully krbe might switch over?

I heard a commercial for this a few weeks ago, and if they are using the same dj, I believe it is Johnny J, the brother of DJ Rich (now known as The Riddler) who was the original DJ for The Beat when it started back in 94.

Was he before Mark D then? I can just remember back when Mark D was on.

Yes, he was before Mark D.
I beleive The Beat started in the Spring of '94.
Before that they were doing broadcasts from Bayou Mama's which were really 80's heavy with some new stuff thrown in.
The Beat started then with DJ Rich (as he was known then) doing an in studio mixshow (probably pre-recorded) for a few weeks before they started broadcasting live from Shelter (same place the Surf Shack on 1960 is now).
DJ Rich left for KTFM in San Antonio in the Spring of '95 and KRBE went on a search for other djs and eventually stopped broadcasting from Shelter and broadcasted from a few different places.

Eventually, I want to say sometime in '98, they ended up at The Roxy with Mark D.
I may be off on that though.

If you're still interested in hearing Mark D, he is a mixer for XM Radio and djs at Rich's on Saturday nights.

When did Johnny J spin for KRBE? I don't remember him.
The first guy to DJ was Tim Flanigan during the Ocean Club days thoughout 1988. When that ended in the summer of 89, KRBE did all studio mixes on Friday and Saturday nights. They didn't do the live thing until December of that year when they picked up Bayou Mama. The DJ there was a guy they called Marky Mark. Did he spin there?

No, Johnny J, if I heard the commercial correctly is the dj now.

The Beat did start as a studio mix by DJ Rich but it was done only one Saturday night. The following weekend on March 5th 1994, The Beat went live from The Aqua Blue Bar (formerly the Barracuda Beach Bar, Netwerk south) at Edgebrook and the Gulf Freeway (I've got it on tape). If I'm not mistaken they were there for 2 weekends and then moved to Shelter (more tape).

Rich is an awesome Dj and is one of the best KRBE has ever had spin for them. I noticed he really began to blow toward the end of his run with The Beat because he would play the same songs a couple of times a night when before he would never do that. I hated that. I used to like when he and Paul Cubby Bryant would do the shows together. Those shows were funny. They would poke at other stations mixshows or use other stations monikers. One time during a hip hop segment they were calling KRBE, 104 Jamz and calling the show the Thunderstorm. Or they would say they were going take us live to mixshows from other cities and would name off the stations they were going to switch over to. Like a dumbass I believed it a few times. Of course it didn't happen.

I didn't know Rich's was still around.. or that Mark D was still in H-town. I'm gonna have to go check him out this weekend.

Re: Yes the beat is back....

Go to http://www.clubroxy.com for more. Doesn't look like KRBE is going to be broadcasting live there though.
Hopefully that will change.

KRBE seemed to have a lot higher ratings when they did the beat and had a dance friendly station going on, maybe this is a sign for things to come?? lets hope or at least I do!!

Re: Yes the beat is back....

I just got around to looking at the flyer for this.
I think it's funny that the tell you that the dj is Johnny J but the flyer has a picture of someone else.
It doesn't surprise me though, probably happens all the time.
Also, what is that dj doing to the microphone stand?

I'm planning to check it out soon. I wanted to go this past Saturday but I promised my cousin I'd go check out his Ramones tribute show at #'s. So I didn't go. But jras20, KRBE isn't going to be broadcasting from the Roxy for this. This is something that only the Roxy is doing at the club using "The Beat" as the name for that night (probably because its familiar). KRBE is booked on Saturday nights with the Surf Shack broadcast. In my opinion it wouldn't be a big loss if they dropped it but I'm sure there are contractual obligations involved. But who really listens to that broadcast.
