A sign that 790/The Zone will be truly dead by mid-August

So what will go in its place? Will it air NBC Sports or Yahoo Sports, which have no Atlanta affiliates? Although I doubt they'd push ESPN to a 1000 watt station and run a lesser network on 28,000 watt WQXI.

Or will WQXI run the Cumulus/Westwood One Talk Radio line up? Imus in The Morning 6-10am, Jonathan Brandmeier Noon-3pm, Michael Savage 3-6pm, Mark Levin 6-9pm, John Batchelor 9pm-1am, Red Eye Radio 1-5am. Some of those shows run on other stations but maybe the Dickey Brothers would bring them to 790? iHeart put its Talk Radio line up on 640. Even though ratings are minimal all those shows now air in Atlanta, a top ten market. Maybe the Dickey Bros. want to do the same with their Talk Radio line up.

Maybe WQXI will run the Good Time Oldies satellite format and bring back Scott Shannon! :D

Some how I feel CBS will end up with 94.1 and 790. Once the FCC gives it's blessing on the Entercom / Lincoln deal there could be a trade with CBS getting 94.1 and 790 while CBS give a smaller market cluster to Entercom. Even if that deal doesn't happen with Cumulus using ESPN on 680 could CBS sports network end up on 790?

I hope they come up with something more appealing than sports. When ever the RF filter comes off of one of my analog phones all I hear is 790 the zone. Maybe they will put on beautiful music. So, when the RF filter gets disconnected I will think I am on hold.

For those that don't know, I live across the street from the 790 transmitter. It comes in on everything.... our fire alarm, phones, even the toaster! (not really on the toaster, but it makes a good story)

:)

I predict that 790 stays sports. With ESPN downgrading to 1230 i expect that CBS will trade San Diego to Entercom to get 94.1 and 790 here. So I see CBS Sports radio coming to 790 with the Game maybe carrying some CBS Sports radio programing overnights and some weekend shifts. They could not use CBS sports radio because Dickey has the rights. I doubt CBS would AMP 94.1 to create a 3 way CHR batter but i dont see CBS keeping Star as is.

DOJ approval is real close. That may come thru next week, leading to a very quick closing shortly thereafter. I also hear 7/15 or 7/16.

I don't know what will happen with 790; Barry might need to find another transmitter site to live across from.

But I do not see Entercom (or CBS or whoever) flipping 94.1 to another format. I say this because of what LFM has invested in the station over the past several months. They brought in a new morning show (whose members have contracts). They just gave away $200,000 in a contest. LFM's SVP Programming John Dimick has brought the station to the next level, turning a boring playlist into what it should be. And the ratings last month increased almost 25%. At the most, I could see them changing the Star 94 moniker, but even that's doubtful.

I'm guessing Entercom (or the potential new owner) has been in the loop and behind all this. After all, what would be Lincoln Financial's incentive to be spending that kind of money at this point?

I thought they needed DOJ clearance for big deals like Comcast buying NBC.
But I'd like to hear Monica Crowley back on. She's a TRN product and most TRN shows are on WCFO.
And I really miss Mark Levin's rants.

As I'm sure you've seen by now, they're trading the excess in Denver for KSWD. I expected a deal with CBS to be in the works as Miami for San Diego makes a lot of sense. They could throw Atlanta in for some other CBS markets and end up with a pretty good deal, too. However, you don't normally issue a press release announcing your new management in those markets when you're going to turn around and immediately sell them.

Please help me with this. So Entercom in Denver is selling all its stations and trading one of them to CBS? Who is Entercom is selling them too? And why is there so much talk about CBS coming into the discussion?

No. Entercom is trading its KOSI 101.1 plus LFM's KYGO 98.5, KKFN 104.3 and KEPN 1600 to Bonneville for KSWD Los Angeles. Entercom will keep the rest of its stations and add LFM's KQKS 107.5 plus KRWZ 950 and an FM translator at 103.1.

There was speculation that Entercom would trade the LFM stations in Miami to CBS for the CBS cluster in San Diego. Those two clusters fit a trade pretty well, though such a deal wouldn't be exactly even. There was also speculation that WQXI/WSTR could be included as part of a larger deal with CBS.

Neither of these scenarios seems likely to me at this point. If a deal like one of those were happening in the immediate future, Entercom wouldn't likely have set management teams for those markets.
