A SIMPLE QUESTION ABOUT WEATHER!

I've always found it curious that during weather forecasts on Canadian radio, they ALWAYS say... "a mix of sun & cloud". Does Environment Canada require that statement? I realize that "party sunny" "partly cloudy" "mostly sunny" etc... may be open to interpretation, but U.S. radio doesn't do that. It's either partly or mostly, or either just plain "sunny" or "cloudy". :-\

I think it's just an informal phrase that gets used. However, The Weather Network always says "Partly Cloudy" in the text portion of its local forecasts.

Okay, a reasonable answer- but then seems awfully suspicious that if someone just dreamed it up one day...that it would become so uniform. ::)

The only other thing I can say is that a "mix of sun and cloud" sounds more positive than "partly cloudy". It's like the glass being half full rather than half empty.

I think "a mix of sun and cloud" is what they teach at Canadian weather schools.
It's a good thing to say.

Personally, IMHO... I think it sounds dumb...kinda "cbc-like". They don't even need to say "a mix of" ... simply, "sun & clouds today". (obviosuly they "mix") :D And it takes longer to say than "partly...xxx".

"Sun & Clouds today, a high of..." is what 680 news in Toronto likes to say at the top of the hour.
Great for getting things in quickly.

"A mix of sun and cloud" sounds more relaxed, less rushed. Some people don't like a rushed weather report.
