A smart move for WBAI

nd2023

Today, WBAI will be broadcasting live from an Occupy Wall Street rally in downtown Manhattan. They're encouraging all the attendees to bring a portable radio and tune it to 99.5.
Last month, an Occupy Wall Street march across the Brooklyn Bridge had over 32,000 people. Maybe some of the attendees today will have a PPM. Since there are many people in support of Occupy Wall Street, becoming the official station of OWS would increase its ratings. If they claim that "99%" are represented by Occupy Wall Street, a 99 share would be awesome. It could do better than FM News 101.9. Wouldn't it be sad if a left-wing talk station beats a non-partisan "news" station?

Another observation: people were collecting money for WBAI at Zuccotti Park (like the few bucks in change would be enough to pay the electric bill).

Have long thought that the stagnancy and superficiality in mass-appeal pop music exhibited the past few decades was a symptom of some huge social pimple ripe to pop.

Okay -- that encroaching cloud formation is merely the small-sample cynicism from a person who has been into, and has worked with, music all his radio life. Others doubtless have had their own observations and indications of lethargy and its repercussions, far more important signs in their own way. The people in their Sixties now who have gone through the Hippies/Squares - Hawks/Doves stuff may very well themselves be divided in rooting between the outcome of some form of social upheaval. While they make up their minds, no doubt many of thm will recall the times when some odd FM radio station was, if not a bugle-call, then at least a reference beacon.

This has to be the shot you were asking for way back when, WBAI. It may be your last shot. Let's see you do some radio.

Too bad they're about 2 1/2 months late to the party, when everyone has forgotten about the "Occupy" movement and it's only a part time occupation. They should have been out there in October on the first day of this thing and tried to attach their call letters to it somehow.

Typical WBAI of the past 25 years. If a tree falls in the WBAI studios, and nobody is listening, does it make a sound?

I'm no fan of WBAI but in their defense I think they have been on top of this. I remember catching them doing live coverage with a panel on the night the NYPD went in to clear out Zucotti Park, when I tuned around to see who was on it well past midnight. But then it seems to me OWS pretty much hits the bullseye in terms of what WBAI is supposed to stand for so they'd *better* be on it, for their own sake.

And 90% of the people at OWS aren't listening to WBAI. Or have any money to give to WBAI. They're only hope is to appeal to some of the aged hippies who are part of the "guilty feeling 1%" to give them some cash.

Firts of all, most of the people at occuppy are working people. The rumor that they aren't is part of the nonesense spread by their detractors. There is so much msinformation being reported that it just shows that their enemies are worried. Yes, most are working. Problem is they are working at jobs below their education and the jobs they were trained for aren't there any more. Most have college degrees but can't afford to pay their student loans. The movement is not political, another lie propagated in the mainstream reporting or lack thereof. I alone know of too many people with post graduate degrees who are working retail because there are NO JOBS. Meanwhile, banks and wall street types who created this disaster were bailed out using tax payer dollars and are now continuing along their merry way and while the economy for the average person is awful without a light at the end of the tunnel, those who caused the mess are receiving enormous boneses and paychecks far in excess of the average working person. The middle class is shrinking and the very wealthy become richer. CEO pay has increased to levels which hasn't been seen in over a century and meanwhile they want to do away with everything gained in the new deal and beyond. No more Medicare, no more Social Security. No more federal protection of our land or environment and if a huge company can make a dollar by selling unsafe food to the population, so be it.

Watch this and learn:

Perhaps you'll finally understand what Occupy is all about. It's Carlin, but it isn't funny, it's the truth. If after this you can happily listen to the likes of Limbaugh than you deserve everything you get and trust me, you're gonna get it in the end.

Carlin was brilliant and his commenatry was not comedy. Maybe too sophisticated for some but what he said in the linked piece was 100% accurate whether you chose to believe it or not. This subject is not about fun or funny. Some obviously are too shallow to understand that.
