A spare frequency??

In a recent Springfield Republican article, the GM of Vox's WBEC in Pittsfield said they sold the 105 signal to a Boston outfit because they had a "spare frequency". Is that like a spare tire, spare toothbrush in the travel kit? Frequencies are not a dime of dozen.

Would that be David Luke?

A figure of speech, I guess. The so-called "spare" frequency they mentioned would probably be 95.9/WUPE (currently part of the "oldies" simulcast with 100.1/WMNB in North Adams, MA). Word has it that once 105.5 makes the move to the Pioneer Valley, the "Live 105" format will make the move to 95.9. 100.1 will stay with the "oldies" since WMNB has a fairly good signal into Pittsfield and parts of South (Berkshire) County. WUPE will probably be the "odd man out" out of this game of musical chairs.

He said "spare". Not "throwaway".
