Maybe this year, due to the arrival of Jack, Star 102 or WJYE will realize that abandoning their entire brand for mostly lame renditions of x-mas classics will not serve their long term interests.

It really does amaze me that anyone can listen (for over a month) to a nonstop parade of contemporary artists (often badly) re-doing the classics. Lame, lame, lame.

I listen to music to get into the beat of it. That's why I listen to music on the radio. Christmas music is mostly a nostalgia trip and it rarely serves as any kind of device to get people up and into the day. It has it's place, and that's NOT 24/7 for over a month.

I usually have a good sense for why certain things get ratings while others do not. I keep hearing how all-Christmas music stations can get good numbers. How? I enjoy Christmas music, but who the hell can listen to it for so long without getting extremely burned on it?

Pitiful.
 
X-Mas music is VERY profitable because there are several advertisers willing to back the format, and there are several stores, dental offices, and/or doctor's offices etc willing to have the Xmas station on.

Nobody. But that doesn't stop hundreds of businesses and offices, large and small, from putting the "free Christmas music" on their sound system. The employees are a captive audience who dutifully write down the station call letters when they get a ratings diary.

Believe it or not, there are some people who actually like Christmas music all day at work because they believe it makes customers spend more and act better. If you're on commission, or collecting tips, that's your Christmas bonus.

Last year, WJYE went Christmas the week before Thanksgiving, and Star delayed until after Thanksgiving. WJYE's ratings have consistently beaten Star ever since then.

Of course, now Star has to fend off Jack. Do they dare to go all Christmas? If they do, Jack may benefit. If they don't, WJYE beats them senseless in stores and offices for the next year.

In the meantime, Janet & Nick continue talking about kids & mommies, and Kiss keeps cutting them off at the knees.

Gee, suddenly the Program Director opening at Star sounds a lot less attractive, huh?
 
The undoing of Christmas stations

My attitude has ALWAYS been: If you ARE something (AC, CHR, etc.) then you better BE that 24/7/365. When I punch 102.5 on my radio, I want to hear a certain thing. Drastically changing that for almost 1/10th of the year is not a sound business decision. I realize they make money playing that game, but I believe it will eventually be their undoing. It is a particularly risky move business-wise, especially considering the growing choices (ie; satellite).

If you're going to be something, be it and stick to it.

I can honestly say that JACK-FM is a godsend for me this year. I usually listen to JYE, Jack & Star most of the time I have the radio on. In the past, when both JYE & Star went to x-mas music, I actually felt like I had almost no choice on the dial. It always sucked. Believe me, when those 2 go to Christmas music this early, I will be on Jack almost exclusively.

I like Christmastime so much I cannot stand being saturated with it.

Do you like Oreo cookies? I do too. Now eat 100 of them and then tell me how you feel about Oreo cookies.

P.S. I typically avoid department stores once they start displacing regular merchandise with tons of Christmas decorations (in mid Sept). I cannot imagine any business wants to hear someone say that. Then again, are shoppers so friggin' shallow that it makes no difference to them?

An interesting point here could be that if Christmas music is as wonderfully profitable as it has been made out to be, why won't Jack just go all Xmas?
They'd be throwing away a 4 something share, but destroying the purpose of Star and 'Jye doing it back when there was no Jack.

Star would then be forced to go after the Jack listener, and may or may not succeed...

I would eat all 100, thats why I quit buying those evil little deliciuos things..

Haveing Worked in both food and clothing retail I can say YES!!! They are that shallow..And Im starting to believe District Managers are PDs in training..Now where did I put those fruit cakes I got for my favorite posting freinds : )

I love christmas music but gosh, 3 christmas stations!! As Charlie Brown used to say " Good Grief" "Ugh"!

All Christmas-All the time should be prohibited as "cruel and unusual punishment" for the poor bastards who have to sit/stand behind the board. To them, I tip my cap for making it sound "fun and exciting." (A reference to one of my previous posts in another thread.) Though it's better than standing on the line at American Axle, I suppose.

Y'know, if Christmas music makes you wanna hurl,there's this little thing on most radios that allows the listener to change the station. Of course, if you're being held captive at the checkout counter at work and the radio is controlled by some 63 year old hanya from Sloan who loves hearing Burl Ives every two and a half hours, you are royally screwed. Hence, my reference to eighth amendment of the United States Constitution.</font>

Burl Ives isn't the problem. It's most of the other "artists" who sound awful doing Christmas music---if not their own.

Yezi, you've got to be kidding. Infinity splitting the Christmas audience that has been the basis for big books by WJYE for several years? Especially when Jack is pressuring Star, which may prevent Star from going Christmas? If Star does go Christmas, Jack has a chance to pick up more Star listeners who aren't quite ready for the "98 Degrees of Christmas" or "Boyz II Men Christmas Cantatas". If Star doesn't go Christmas, WJYE is home free in offices and stores all over WNY.

"Jacking" up Christmas just doesn't make any sense at this point.

Ahem. I hope we're not getting too full-of-ourselves there, Mr. Pastrick. BTW, the blog is worth reading. Nice to see the time spent hanging around with some of the staff at The Record at Buffalo State wasn't wasted.

The listener may want to hear the Parodies...not all the time, but tossed in here and there. The "Walking in my girfriends underwear" song to the tune of "Walking in a winter wonderland" is pretty funny.

Toronto's Mix does this every year...sister to EZ Rock and the idea seems to work for them...<P ID="signature">______________
