A Thanksgiving challenge

Thanksgiving is coming, which means the noontime onslaught of the folkie perennial "Alices Restaurant" by Arlo Guthrie.

Let's see how many stations DON'T play it this year. Unless you're an Oldies station (or AAA or NPR) there is absolutely no reason to be playing this song anymore. Many stations haul it out each year using the weak logic "well, that's what we've always done." As time has progressed, the song has lost its relevance and really has very little to do with Thanksgiving itself anyhow.

I've been a champion of the tradition before (and may have been in denial the past few years) but some 40 years on, it's time to move on. Sorry.

Well, Ben, I guess I'll be the torch bearer in my neck of the woods. WXRB-FM/95.1 Dudley-Webster, MA (an OLDIES station) will be playing it at 1:00 PM and will also offer a "second helping" of it at 4:00 PM (by popular request). What would Thanksgiving be, without the "Mass-a-cree"? I'm sure that others out there will continue the tradition.

I've been throwing this out there for several years, this is an amazing tradition. Most rockers, classic rockers, classic hitsters, AAA's, and some AC's around here will oblidge.. The interesting part are the stations you would expect to, that's don't, and the stations one would never expect, that do.. We'll see who are the traditionalists and who are the turkeys..

If you're gonna ditch a T'giving song, how about that song by Adam Sandler, which gets played not once but over and over and over?

You never know. Kiss 108 stopped playing "Wishing On A Star" years ago, so we shall see...

Have they stopped "kicking off the weekend" with Loverboy's "workin' for the weekend"?

On the Arlo note, the ZLX website says they are playing it three times

It's radio's Charlie Brown special......it's not going anywhere and has it's place

Oh, good Lord.
Some people just GOTTA leave a turd in the punch bowl.

Alice's is so done. On the other hand, the audio from WKRP "Turkeys Away!" never gets old and gets on every year

Nice to know there are a few of us that feel:

a. some traditions NEED to die

b. sad to say I remember when the song was first released.
thought it sucked then, still sucks today. ;D

We're a AAA station so to some degree it's a natural for us. I still enjoy hearing it once a year...

Though it looks like saying that will make you all move away from me on the group W bench.

We did get a lot of calls asking when it would be on, for what that's worth.

I guess if it's something that drives a person to tune in on a day when there's not a lot of Time Spent Listening, what the hell?!
