A Top 500 of all time from the UK

Here's Smooth Radio (CHR format) and its top 500 songs. That is one of my favorite streams in the format, and the difference in "perspective" of another nation is interesting by both what it has and what it does not.

The top five are:

And their message is "After thousands of your votes, we are counting down Smooth's All Time Top 500 for 2023!"

I find it interesting that "Just The Two of Us" is credited at #498 to Bill Withers and Grover Washington, Jr. I have an original U.S. copy on Elektra Records and the artist is listed as Grover Washington, Jr. (only). The credit at #498 here is better, and more descriptive. After all, Bill co-wrote the song and sang it.

I had never heard the newer rendition of "Dancing In The Moonlight" by Toploader. It's worthy. I may take a look at the entire chart to see what other intriguing titles are there.

Smooth is a Soft AC rather than a CHR and the music selected will reflect that. It's gone less soft in recent months, they've tried to de-emphasize the soft aspect of the format (the strapline changed from "Your Relaxing Music Mix" to "Only The Best Music") but it's still much softer than, say, Heart or Magic.

In other words, don't expect a lot of Guns 'n' Roses or Fatboy Slim in Smooth's Top 500.

But online they offer a variety of streams, something we don't see much in the US but which in Europe is very common.

One of my favorite stations in France has dozens of derivatives by decade and by style, all based on pop music;

Nostalgie les plus grandes chansons There are enough choices there that I can switch back and forth and listen for hours to familiar old songs.

At the Grammys where that song was nominated, the writers performed their songs. His co-writers shouldn't have tried to sing.

Smooth jazz radio (a talk station where I live used to do smooth jazz weekends) tend to play a version with more Grover and less Bill than what I am used to.
