A Tradition For Three Stooges' Fans In Boston Continues

Local program listings on Titan TV.com have now been posted through New Year's Eve, and I went on it to see what New Year's Eve specials might be on the air this year.

Those in Boston who are Three Stooges fans will be happy to learn that once more, WSBK-38 will broadcast a marathon of the Stooges' shorts from 8 P.M. to 1 A.M. New Year's Eve.

Traditionally, all the episodes shown during WSBK's "New Year's Stooges Marathon" have featured Curly Howard. One year, WSBK slipped in a Shemp episode, and in the days that followed, the station got many angry phone calls because let's face it----Curly IS the Stooges!

At one time, WSBK had wide cable coverage throughout much of the Northeast and beyond. Now, I believe it's only available in the Boston television market and maybe a few neighboring areas.

Still, Stooges fans in the Boston area may want to watch, or if they're going out or want to see something else, set their VCR or Tivo to record it.

WSBK is available in most of Massachusetts, in some cable systems out of Massachusetts, and on the superstation Package on Dish Network.

Curly IS the Stooges? That's news to Shemp?

Sure they were all brothers, but Gary Owens once told me that Shemp was his favorite Stooge. Shemp was the real actor from the bunch, as you know. I love them all, aside from Curly Joe. And if I saw Joe, I would love to throw a Pie in his face, although his contract specifically excluded that. I met Moe and Larry before they passed on. Even had Moe's home telephone number. He wanted me to call him and play a Three Stooges collage I put together for a Telephone joke line called Laff Line, in Los Angeles!

Shemp gets a bad rap.... undeserved, I think. No doubt Curly was the best, but I liked Shemp too. I always thought it hilarious how when the short started out, his hair was always combed so neat, but after a slap from Moe it resembled a soggy mop for pretty much the rest of it.

As for Curly Joe and Joe.... yeesh. No thanks.

Shemp was the real actor in the bunch and maybe the most talented. However, after he rejoined the troup (after Curly's retirement) the writing and production values of the shorts went way downhill. Columbia knew the days of the shorts were numbered and just didn't want to put any money into them. So we never saw Shemp at his best.

You are spot on with that observation!

Who had the best hair?

Shemp's hair was cool. Come to think of it, Moe's hair was fantastic, and Larry's hair was outrageous!
