"A VACATION FOR YOUR EARS"

Don't ask me why I started this topic. Another Jones-related rant, what a shocker :D. But when I heard Keith Riker's voice for a Station ID for Jacksonville's old Jones affiliate (courtesy of spiritof67 - Thanks so much again!) uttering the words, "A vacation for your ears," I thought, how appropriate was that? In all of the Station IDs I heard for WQJZ, I never heard that one. Awesome!

I am currently going over the February 2004 JRN airchecks with Al Vincent at the mic. He was OK, but certainly not in Keith Riker's league. But one thing that absolutely drives me crazy about him is that he was famous for not giving the title and artist of the first song in a three song set . There are a couple of great elusive tracks that he played, but I will be left to wonder exactly who it was. But with some of the sharp listeners on this board, I could probably give you guys the exact place in the files where they were played, and you guys could nail them for me for sure :D.

Anyway, the main point of this post is to once again thank spiritof67 for the Jones memories. I downloaded everyone of the 2004 files, and they are of very good quality.

Chris

hey speaking of keith riker, i've talked before on here about a little college station in rural pennsylvania (kutztown university radio) that does a mixture of jazz and oldies as their daytime format. it's a great mix of jazz that includes old time traditional jazz and smooth jazz and i've heard a lot of jones like tunes on there. well give the station a listen and tell me if i'm crazy but the guy doing the liners coming out of the stopsets sounds like keith riker!! i really think it is. is keith doing little odd jobs like making liners for tiny stations now that he's gone from jones? check it out. it looks like on saturdays it's that daytime format all day. anytime the schedule says "cafe kur," is when i think i'm hearing keith. http://kur.kutztown.edu/

Chris:

"A vacation for your ears" was used extensively by Jones in the past year or so...I heard it routinely even on WQJZ in the final weeks..the Keith Riker phrase still keeps reverberating in my head....

FYI here's Keith's new gig I came across while surfing the web...

Keith R. has been doing voiceovers and voice acting for a long time. Most likely making a lot more money off that than voicetracking for JRN.
I think that's one reason I never really enjoyed him. I like more natural "real people" voices and he sounded like he was listening too closely to himself in the headphones rather than talking to people. The voiceover-announcer delivery has always been default for the SJ format though, if you listen to hot AC or CHR it sounds really announcerish but SJ is more a B/EZ approach and B/EZ uses announcers.

I remember reading you didn't llike KR all that much in a prior post..but damn I've listened to the guy since around '95.

Just hearing his voice reminds me of smooth jazz and all of the great times from the past.

Personally I'll take KR over Kenny G, Ramsey Lewis, where does it end? Another great voice for SJ was Kenny Cortes and I also liked John Evans.

Have you listened to Kepler's Top 20? I COULD DO A BETTER JOB (as a graduate of Connecticut School Of Broadcasting - 1973) lololol!!!! ;D

I have to completely agree with majaman on this one. Keith Riker was PERFECT for the brand of Smooth Jazz Jones delivered. He probably wouldn't have been a good fit for like a WSMJ in Baltimore or WJZW in Washington when they were around, because they played far more R&B and A/C on those stations, and more tailored to personalities like Al Santos or Jay Lang. But "easy listening" brands of jazz that are heavy on instrumentals and light on vocals call for a guy like Riker or John Evans, IMO.

Mark, Chris, Spirit, & DD --

Sorry for my too long silence here... I've been off the grid for awhile dealing with business issues and a nasty PC virus to boot. Seems I picked up a variant of the SmitFraud virus while downloading an update to my mp3 codec. This virus is particularly, but no files were lost. I recovered everything including all my precious JRN airchecks.!

Currently I'm working on uploading my airchecks. Please be patient, I'm about 10% there, and still have a way to go. My dsl connection uploads at under 300 kbs, so this is taking more time than expected. But I guarentee you will be pleased with the results. Good things are worth waiting for. Following Spirit's lead I set up a free account on 4shared.com and will work on getting these files up there for you this week.

To reiterate, These are the airchecks I have - mostly non-scoped with a few exceptions:

~2 hours of WQJZ (.mp3) from Summer 1999 with Debra Lee sitting in for Keith Riker. Very nice mix with tunes from the 90's. These file uploads are already complete.

~5 hours of WKYL 102.1 recorded in July 2008. These are currenly wav files, I hve to convert these to mp3 first before uploading.

~10 hours of WQJZ (.mp3) from September 2008. These file uploads are in progress now.

Just wanted to give you this update. Will have more to say later, but didn't want you to think I've dropped off the planet.

Enjoyed reading your latest rantings.. I will be in touch.

-Randy

Hey Randy. That's GREAT! Take your time. I can't wait, especially for the late 90s stuff. Thanks so much for going for the trouble.
