A Very Nice New Stream

They're playing way too much non-melodic "Eno-esque" type electronic experimentation....way too over the top...more spaced out than "Musical Starstreams" from what I am hearing.

Had to tune out after a few of these tunes just got to me, like the one currently playing...Massive Attack - Splitting The Atom (feat. Horace Andy)

Was like listening to a funeral dirge. :D

Majaman just nailed the facet of chill/ambient that runs me off too - Eno-esque. I like that! The new Massive Attack 2 me sounds like quirkiness for the sake of quirkiness...little hard to listen to.

If you want to hear a really fun show that is centered on chill and plays a lot of cool and wow stuff around it check out Electro Lounge on Jax's public radio station. It's a 2 hr show 9-11p T-Sat and they do stream. This is the most intelligently programmed and cohesive eclectic show i think I've ever heard: He also posts playlists. http://www.wjct.org/radio/playlists. And they stream : http://www.wjct.org/radio/listen

Chilltrax seems to be staying away from anything remotely smooth jazz sounding. They're big on playing the "core artists" of chillout like Thievery Corporation, Zero 7, Groove Armada, Moby, and yes, Massive Attack. As Majaman points out you do hear them get a little experimental at times, but they always bring you back to a song with more traditional structure pretty quickly, and many times it's by one of the core artists. I'm liking it more and more...and for a station without jocks, it's got quite a bit of personality thanks to some wacky imaging. They're not taking themselves too seriously.

I like the avant garde type stuff.

www.somafm.com has some good stuff as well.

The music mix on Chilltrax really seems to be coming together. I don't hear so much of the experimental far-out stuff any more. And the tempo seems to have picked up. It's still pretty far from Smooth Jazz but the mood is similar. I definitely think it's worth checking out again.

Now that Broadcast Architecture has weighed in with what THEY think "Chillout Radio" is (see separate thread), it's pretty obvious that terrestrial radio will never "get it" when it comes to chillout music.

I was about to re-check this stream out....at the time was listening to "the .wav" when Ritenour's "Water from The Moon" came on. Love that tune, a great memory buster from way back. It sounds just as good now as when I first heard it.

Proceeded to tune into Chilltrax. Agree the stream sounded better, a LOT better than when I first tuned in.

The big problem I have with chill, however, is it seems to have a short shelf life. Some of the tunes sound great the first few times I hear them, but they seem to quickly get old after repeated listening.

I still believe that playing selected chill cuts along with great smooth jazz tunes (both old and new) is the way to go for a format that might work....similar to the approach WQCD took back in 2003, but without the covers and old r n'b Motown hits you can hear all of the time on any oldies/AC format.

Nock, thank you for posting this link. I have never listened to much Chill music before, but yesterday I tried it out and listened all night. Great music. Thanks again.

My pleasure and they have definitely tightened it up. To Majaman's comments about shelf life. I have heard them play some tracks I played 5 years ago and have gone back and reintroduced them to my show. Still had that vibe that I was looking for and found it very refreshing to hear again much like your Rittenour comment. Maybe it's just me but college radio shaped my head a very long time ago.

Kinda off topic, but on a whim I happened to tune into the sister station...

Radio Danz

Radio Danz - Flash Player

I'm a Contemporary Jazz purist through-and-through, but if you happen to be into the upbeat, energy vibe on occasion, this station is one of the better I've heard.

What is nice about Chill Trax is that I am able to get through all the network blocks at work and pick it up. Started in a new building and do not have access to a public network. Gotta keep the tunes coming in!

Hey guys, I was on the web and happened to go to the Chilltrax's website, looks like they have their new site up and going. I haven't listened to much in the past few weeks though. So, I don't know how long it's been up. They have a few ways to listen too.
