A weak signal relaunches

Those who read Milkman's site ( www.milkmanunlimited.com/tunedin.htm ) already know this, but I decided to mention it anyway.

Tourist information station CFYZ will flip to Business news Monday April 9th, making them Canada's first Business news radio station.

1280 CFYZ will also have new call letters. (CFBN), and the station will stream.
It's a good thing they will becauase the signal really isn't all that great.

That didn't last long

The CRTC has revoked the license, the Airport Authority stated that the station was no longer in operation and the license was surrendered. At least according to the press release by the CRTC.

The station no longer has an over-the-air signal but they are still streaming online, and their website is operating with business news. They're still calling themselves CFBN, but no 1280 reference.

Good. Now that they are dark maybe I can get 1280 WHTK Rochester NY again. This "airport" channel was a useless service/station anyway.

Useless? They did maintain *some* usefulness as business news radio, but it didn't work out, obviously.

i don't know of many cities that had an airport station or a business station..what a waste...the airport station was all recorded info and originally started out on 530am back in the mid 80's....it was also a weak signal. now the 530 signal belongs to CIAO which was on 790 originally and it was known as 790 disco.

Er..."Disco 7 nine OH!" then later it went multicultural a while before moving down the dial to AM 530.

I'd love to hear an aircheck of "Disco 7 nine oh" if you have one Adam.
(please and thanks!)

I also forget who owned that station before the Evanov group bought it.

i wont hold my breathe, but
how possible would it be to have am530
bring back the simucast of "Z103"...
they did it in 1995, or so, and this 'kid' in
buffalo was able to listen to 103..5 - - being
close to toronto/niagara falls/lewiston, i can
some times, get it, but am530 worked in
the house, in the middle of the tonawanda's/amherst....

This was long before they bought 88.5 FM
A very reliable source at that station told me that I am more likely to hear a Jewel 88.5 repeater in the early morning hours.

I find that to be rather silly, since their late night is all instrumental easy favorites lately...who wants to hear that on AM??

However, it also wouldn't surprise me a bit if Evanov group decides to toss on CIRR radio. (Their most recent sister station in the Toronto market targeting the gay community.)

In doing so, they expand the strength of a station that already has a very lousy and weak signal in Toronto.

Speaking of Jewel 88.5, last time I lived in Toronto. (2004). I cannot recieved 88.5 THE JEWEL in downtown Toronto or anywhere around Toronto city limits. I only can picked up the 88.5 signal when I headed north of Steele Ave. 88.5 should have a repeater for downtown Toronto.

Yes, that is a strange signal. It was meant to be licenced to Newmarket Ontario, not Toronto.

Also, back in 2004, wasn't the station doing the Dancin' oldies format? Or was that 2003?
I do know it used to be called Foxy 88five long before they decided to call it Jewel. (while maintaining a very similar, or identical format to that of Jewel)
