Former WNEP anchor John Foster died last weekend when
stricken ill at home. John was best remembered for being
the anchor on the 15 minute WNEP newscast, then the 30
minute one that pre dated the Elden Hale regime in 1976.
John left to become the Tourism Director for Col/Montour
County and held that post until he was felled by a devastating
stroke in 1981. He lost all powers of speech after that and
was in ill health for a long time. Although the voice was
silenced, his wit, good humor and wisdom lived on. My contact
with him was once a year at statewide meetings in Harrisburg
(John staying active with the Col/Montour bureau) and he was
a joy to be with. The funeral was Thursday and I was glad to
see Beale's Bites and WNEP do something on his passing.
John also worked in local radio news, working at WILK, WBAX and
at WBRE AM before making the transition to TV news. He sported
a crew cut in his first years at WNEP. I asked him once why he
changed the hair style, letting it grow to a conventional length,
was it a management order or personal choice. He looked at me
and said, "My barber moved and I was too darn lazy to find him".
