A->Z, A->Z....

So we all pretty much know BLM will kick Frank's ass (again) in this battle of the should-never-get-played on the radio songs, but the question is, who cares? Do listeners? Is there any research to show a spike in the ratings when the 17 different versions of "All Along the Watchtower" get played back to back to back? [EDIT] Discuss.......

[EDIT-vulgar]

BLM will kick Franks ass? Obviously you weren't privy to the last book amigo. when are you old timers going to just give in and admit that a company from outside maine came in and cleaned your clock? nassau just does it bigger and better, case closed. franks a to z will be full of hits that people know and love. blm will play 5 versions of the same song by different artists and then play some of the most obsolete music ever made. nobody cares about the third track on side two of the 4th mott the hoople lp that they played back in the trailor while smoking out in litchfield. the majority of us got over that stuff a long time ago. but there are those of you who still want to hold on to the past and cant accept change. herb and his team will play the most obscure trash just so they can milk it for as long as they can to show they have a bigger library. who cares? if the songs suck i couln't care less if it were two weeks longer than frank. oh yeah and 1000 bucks a day aint to shabby either. nuff said. good luck to both stations. puke on tommy c.

Frank - BLM..boring...I'm more interested Underminer in your thoughts about the stealth PD search going on for a country PD in Portland by Mr. Goldstein. Hmmm.

lol. You're right there. I guess the biggest oxymoron in the radio industry is "stealth job search". It's stealth until some consultant begins making quiet inquiry calls.

And sorry...thought this was the 'All Things A to Z post'

I think congratulations are in order for The Captain, Celeste, The Guru, and (especially) Tommy C. Last I tuned in, BLM was still in the B's. If the first few days are a sign of things to come, we're in for a real treat this time.

Where's Frank at? I checked in this afternoon and they were playing (surprise) Hotel California. I find it interesting that Frank doesn't post their play list on the website. Kind of reminds you of that kid who wouldn't take a shower in front of the other kids after high school gym class... if you get my drift. Frank's nub of a playlist will never measure up to the colossus that is WBLM.

Oh, Frank.. what's so great about $1000? You can't buy a recreation room for a grand.

Oh and Dogboy, people around here DO care about Mott the Hoople. Mainers grew up on WBLM, and grew up with a fantastic selection of music, a selection they can't get anywhere else because no one has the balls. The people that run Frank come from suburban New Jersey, where they're used to homogenized product. Frank caters to that from-away type that brought Applebees, Lowe's and Starbucks along with them.

Plus, when it comes down to it, who would you rather hang out with. Someone called the Party Guru, or someone called The Professor?

No further questions, your honor!

Northern New England/Re: A->Z, A->Z....

threefer [EDIT] for too long. just because they have a bigger, yet more obscure, library of music do you really think anyone cares. people want hits, you knowsongs that they actually know. blm has played some real [EDIT] over the last few days. on the other hand, i haven't heard a non hit on the frank. by the way the last time i drove by starbucks, applebee's and lowes the parking lots were all filled with cars with maine license plates. so obviously mainers have embraced those businesses just like they have frank. [EDIT].that way i can spend the money on my kids summer camp or on a vacation. not to mention blm will have ONE winner for the rec room...frank is giving away a grand a DAY with lots of winners.

not sure why the frank doesn't post their playlist. maybe he will post it when they finish the a-z. oh one more thing, [EDIT] maybe that's another thing the suburban new jersey folks brought to maine. if so you'll probably catch them eating over at applebees with the professor discussing the GU stuck to the bottom of their shoe.

you're free to go now.

[EDIT-inflammatory]

you guys are so cute, on here sticking up for your stations.

neither station is changing the world with this now overdone A-Z thing.

your 'my dad can beat up your dad' posts are quite adorable though.

BLM kicked Franks ass?
BLM kicked Franks ass?

I still don't know how I can get my head around this one. According to BLM's website this was their biggest and best "A to Z" ever!!! 23 days a new Blimp record!!! While all this might be true depending on your perspective...the one statement on their site with regards to their "A to Z" that really got me laughing harder than hearing someone referred to as "The Goo" was the part that said..."More Classic Rock Variety...Less Repetition. THAT'S HOW WE ROCK ON BLM" That's how they rock?..by playing four of the most obscure versions of the same exact song in a row? Here's a suggestion for any and all Citadel programmers who are obviously "just beginning" their radio careers...when executing a promotion such as an "A to Z", if you're going to sell it as the one with the biggest variety and less repetition...try playing a different song one right after the other!!! You would no doubt be absolutely amazed at how this has worked for stations in real radio markets. Anyway, as you go forward in the vocation of your choice do not let these little set backs ruin your love for what you have chosen to do...for every career has its hurdles, as will your next choice which no doubt involves a paper hat and that fake, smug (or disturbingly open mouthed) smile you have on your mug already. I will now sit back and wait to see which of the Citadel "AL's" respond to this posting first...and giggle with glee as they spiral downward towards incoherent Ivy Babble...

Didn't you hear? Portland has more Humble Pie fans per 1000 people than any other radio market in the US! And WBLM was THERE when Bloodrock played at the town dump in Rumford with Cactus opening up for them.

Believe me, if they tested Ginger Baker drum solos, they'd be through the roof! The blimp clearly understands the classic rock radio listener.

Well, it's time to go rounding up empties, and hitchhike to Michigan so I can get twice the deposit!

Cheers,
OldPort Wino

It has always amazed me how so many outsiders can beat up on the programming done by radio competitors, or even stations that they know very little about? ???

Whether the BLIMP plays 5 different versions of the same song or not obviously has some attraction for its listeners? Otherwise...they wouldn't bother.

Whether FRANK-FM takes a different spin on the same music and attracts listeners is a personal choice.

The big issues here are whether their slogans actually define their on-air product? And whether advertisers believe in the programming enough to purchase AIR-TIME! ::)

As always you make very good points Argy...and your input is always respected and valued but honestly, I love the song Badge...but does that mean I'm going to love hearing three different versions of it in a row? I don't love any song that much and I highly doubt anyone with an ounce of common sense does either. I didn't hear Frank claiming anything during their A-Z that they didn't deliver on...if you did please elaborate because I truly may have missed something and that is not me just being facetious. BLM on the other hand brags about running so long with their A-Z and the "ONLY" reason they were able to do that is because of the multiple versions and at some points even throwing in...(and I was unbelievably cracked up by this)...Christmas music. BLM should have called their promotion the "Tons of Ambiguity Tour" because that is what they delivered...on top of the multiple version problem they played a lot of cuts that nobody knew or cared to hear again. Example..."Hey blimpsters...here is a recording of Janis Joplin singing an old polish lullaby captured at the end of a performance in Memphis back in 1969 just before she passed out and fell of the stage..." At least the songs that Frank played...love them or hate them...people knew them and remembered where and when they heard them back in the day and above all...they only had to hear one version of it.

Hi maximum noise!

I was totally unaware of the fact that there were 3 different versions of BADGE? Who did the other 2? ???

Because I'm constantly channel surfing...I don't necessarily believe the familiarity of programming or repetition applies in my case? [And even though I'm going out on a limb, I'll venture to say that many other channel surfers feel the same way?]. ???

What matters to broadcast-types like myself is if the music a particular station plays happens to match the mood I'm in? If it does...I'll listen longer to see what tune or tunes come up next in the rotation? If one of 'em doesn't appeal to me during the time I'm listening...I'll switch to a different radio station.

My habit also extends to radio stations that offer talk programming.

Some of the hosts will cover a topic that I can relate to...or at least...ENJOY? Others leave me STONE COLD...with subjects and studio guests that BORE THE HELL OUT OF ME! And when that happens...I turn off the radio in favor of a CD or a cassette that I ENJOY! ;D

And yes...I still have a working cassette player in my ancient old Dodge!

Blimpsters are a different breed. They've lived in Maine all their lives and more musical diversity is the norm for them. That approach must be working, since they have the #1 rock morning show in town.

Sad that WBLM is the only station left that doesn't insult their listeners intelligence. $20,000 rec room vs. $10,000 bonus? The numbers speak for themselves.

Better hope you have "tenure," Professor, it's the only thing that will save you this time!

$10,000 Cash much better than a $20,000 suggested retail price rec room.I don't think the professor is going anywhere. You just keep on predicting. You're obsession with The blimp is really getting old.The spring ratings will be out soon. It's almost time for the bi-annual ThreeFer FRANK bashing.

Okay,
First things first...Argy, I should have been a little more clear when I mentioned the multiple versions point from my original post and for that I apologize. What I meant was more than one version from the original artist. As with my example "Badge" you have Cream studio, Cream live, Clapton live...in a row. How can anyone with even one ounce of programming experience believe this is a good plan of attack? How many listeners do they actually think are sitting their tuned into the blimp thinking..."Wow, I love this song...I hope they play it again right after this...HEY! I can't believe they did it...I sure hope they do it again...what's that girl? Herby's stuck in a well?" Anyway...moving on to the ever omnipresent Threefer...what can I say? Blimpsters are a rare breed, they go with musical diversity like vinegar and water. The blimp is old...it is tired...it is boring...the same recycled junk they were doing while I was in college back in the 80's...and with their level of ignorance and ego...they will never change anything to adapt and perform above where they are right now which will signal their continued failure and WFNK's continued success. #1 "rock" morning show...in which demographic? Well at least you positioned your statement with "rock"...they helped themselves quite a bit with that successful run of O&A on their little sister station CYY didn't they? Considering their only "rock" competiton is "the little stick that could" across the way I am surprised they can find their way into the building from the parking garage with the bags over their heads. In closing let me say these two things, I have had the opportunity to meet and talk with "The Professor" (that you continue to swing at whenever you get the chance) on many occasions and I find him to be an extremely intelligent and polite individual. If I was sitting on a contestant panel with millions of prize dollars in the balance...and the question dealt with rock trivia...I would rather have the Professor on my side than herby, da goo, zelda or the "c" combined. They collectively should be bringing that guy coffee daily...and more amazing than his knowledge base is that he is half their age! Finally...I happened to be dining with some friends from the west coast the other night...both of which work in this wonderful industry we all fight so passionately over day in and day out and they both agreed on one very important point... There is some amazing radio happening in this market, some incredible voice talent, imaging, music selection and flow...and none of it is coming from blm.

For underminder and maximum noise....

YES...there IS some amazing radio in the market. The problem many listeners have is weeding through the clutter in order to hear it!
:-[
Do I really care if a talk-formatted radio station carried the debate between the Republican candidates 3 or 4 days after the event took place? NOPE! But I was bombarded with promos for the debate all of last weekend! :-[

Do I really care if a sweeper liner tells me I'm listening to more music, more music more music? NOPE....just GIVE me with THE MUSIC!

Do I like shotgun screaming commercials during a stopset voiced by people who are doubling as car dealers? ["quick ma...give me the remote...I need a better and less noisy radio station!"].

My point is this...there are some programmers who understand who is listening, while others are getting 'corporate direction' in order to make a QUICK BUCK! :p

argytunes

Incidentally maximum noise...thanks for clarifying BADGE and who recorded it for me! ;)
