The infamous "Warpfactor" posted on AA that if a Howard Stern station tries to immediately replace Howie with a local host, that host will be ripped to shreds by Stern's old leftover fans.He cited the example of when then-rock WKDF hired Ian Pace (later Punnett) to replace Heritage morning host Carl Mayfield who went to do middays at WSIX (who's now back at 'KDF) a long time ago in the early nineties.I remember the Billboard interview that Pace/Punnett did in which he talked about the backlash of Mayfield's old fans and the debilitating effect it had on him & his partner Jeff (who the station canned at the height of the controversy) and how horrible it was dealing with the old angry Mayfield fans. And then about a year later I see Punnett bails out to go to WGN in Chicago to do nights.I agree with Warp,Pace/Punnett must have had enough of trying deal with Mr.Mayfield's legacy and trying to live up to it and probably just wanted to get the hell out of there and ANYTHING would better that trying to keep fighting a losing battle."Warp" suggested a "jockless cooling off" period" in the vacated Stern morning slot, maybe for about a month with wall to wall music,to blow off whatever remaining Stern fans that are still hanging around.Maybe that's what WKDF should have done before bringing in Pace/Punnett & friends.I guess it's good Stern isn't on a Nashville station.

There are several points in your post that are inaccuarate and need to corrected. First of all, the air personality who replaced Carl P. Mayfield was named Ian CASE, not Pace (Ian Pace was the drummer for Deep Purple). His partner on the air went by the name "The Coach". After he left KDF, he resurfaced on 104.5 the FOX as Jeff Roberts and is now back on KDF at night as Jeff Lyons. Carl P. Mayfield did leave KDF in 1990 for WSIX but, he did afternoon drive time for the Big 98, not middays. And true, he did leave WSIX in 1998 to return to WKDF, but he has been gone from WKDF for close to two years now. When 104.5 became the Zone in August 2003, Carl P. Mayfield's show was moved KDF to 104.5 the Zone, where it failed. Carl P. Mayfiled has not been on the air in Nashville, since. Also, I don't think Ian Case failed as a replacement for a Nashville radio legend, after all, he was did mornings on KDF for three or four years before he left. And those who ddi have a problem with Ian Case wasn't because he was replacing a legend but be his brand of humor was much different than his predecessors' brand of humor.

And don't forget that Ian left for a while in the mid-90s and came back in '97 (although doing the show via ISDN from Atlanta) to team with Mike "Duke" Donnagon until they were unceremoniously forced out in early '99 in favor of Rick & Bubba, and then the infamous country format change came a couple of weeks later.<P ID="signature">______________

Jeff Roberts and Jeff Lyons are two different people. Jeff "The Coach" Roberts went back to Iowa. Jeff Lyons was a weekender at KDF during the Ian Case and The Duke days. Lyons went under the name "Fudge."
The Coach left not because of the Mayfield backlash but because of budget cuts. Ian and Duke were the dominant voices on that show. Coach just did the sports and didn't play the same role that he and Case had done together back in Iowa.

Forgive me if I missed something, but Ian Punnet is the weekend host for Coast to coast/GeorgeNoory? This is not the same Ian Pace/Punnet or whoever is it? LOL

Re: AA Post by \

Swiss, check out Wikipedia and search name Ian Punnett. Consider the source, but I believe you are thinking of one and the same.

Thank you for the information on Ian Punnet. I knew he has been the weekend hosts for Coast to coast for several years now off and on. I never made the 103.3 connection though.

Re: AA Post by \

You are welcome. I recall one particluar day's tirade circa 1995, Ian "Case" Punnett took a listener's criticism or call not very well. Punnett-Case took some guff for broadcasting a certain opinion, or that a caller said he couldn't follow Carl P's legacy. Anyway, finally Punnett-Case went off the deep end calling the listener a (rhymes with maggot, starts with an F). Donegan reeled him in for an apology. To my knowledge there was not a suspension.

Re: AA Post by \

Punnett left KDF and went to WGN in Chicago. After that Punnett went to WGST in Atlanta while he completed seminary. He did Art Bell's weekend show and still does that show on the weekends sometimes.
Now Punnett does a morning radio show in Minneapolis with his wife.
