AAA 103.7 KHJK sold to EMF.

I have speculated about just such a scenario numerous times on this board, so gotta say it's nice to have something actually happen. ;D Even blind squirrels find a nut every now and then.

This makes a lot of sense for EMF, as it brings its programming into a large area of Southeast Texas. I had figured something like this would happen after EMF bought the 97.7 rimshot in the San Antonio market.

Guessing Air1 for the 103.7 signal, as that is what is on the 97.7 San Antonio station, although they might just go with whatever provides the biggest difference from KSBJ.

What I cant stand about EMF is their guilt trip pledge drive tactics. If we dont get more pledges we will have to start turning off stations. Oh really, how did you manage to purchase big signals like WABB.

And what about their agreement not to compete with KSBJ. Oh well money talks even in the "non-profit" world. ::)

First of all, chalk that one up, Froggy. I'll be the first to admit I'm surprised by this announcement as I fully expected Cumulus to repurchase 97.5 and 103.7.

I also agree that EMF's guilt trip strategy is irritating. Didn't that group get nearly $100 million in donations while pleading poverty to get main studio waivers?

I would hope they go with Air1 on this station then it won't directly complete with KSBJ (which is Christian AC like KLove)..

Actually their not turning them off..typically they are letting folks like Clear Channel use them to rebroadcast HD-2s or AM stations (if they are translators in the commercial band).

I think the recent expansion of the KSBJ empire has pretty much put an end to any handshake agreement with EMF to not compete. After all, KSBJ wants to enter areas where EMF already has a presence.

EMF has a batch of translator applications for the Houston area, along with other religious broadcasters. However it appears the FCC is finally getting off its butt and moving on LPFM, and that is probably going to result in hundreds, even thousands of translator applications getting tossed. So EMF getting into the full-power world is a smart move.

I'm curious if EMF would be on the prowl for a second station in Houston for whichever format doesn't wind up on 103.7.

I am kinda surprised that someone like KSBJ didn't go after it for NGEN.... Of course they just shelled out a lot for 96.9.

EMF went with Air1 for 97.7 San Antonio since it was their second station -- they already had K-Love on KZLV 91.3.

I imagine they will go with K-Love; clearing K-Love seems to be their first priority when entering a market.

Was there a radio station called K-Love back then here in The City of Houston? I think's there's one in L.A. called K-Love, which is unrelated to The EMF radio chain of stations but This K-Love station in L.A. and the other station formerly known as K-Love are both owned by Univision.

Although the presence of KSBJ in the Houston market could steer EMF in the other direction. I don't know of any KSBJ equivalent in SA.

This is why I play the Mega!(millions) and the Powerball..
In the unlikely event, I beat the ODDs and WIN:

I can take this radio property off the hands of the suits
and give the people what they want : )

Usually, noo....ALWAYS the stations I can actually
afford, have a population of . . . wait for it,
3,500..encourage you to get the land line since
they don't have the cell tower there......yet
... and the bragging rights of we just
got the Town's first "Burger King" (lol)

I sure hope so - K-Love isn't any better than KSBJ. My theory is this is a money making venture, they know KSBJ is hot on the trail of new acquisitions to flesh out a Houston wide NGEN network. But KSBJ is strapped for cash right now after buying 96.9. So EMF buys 103.7, parks K-Love or Air-1 on it - KSBJ reacts to the competition by buying them out at an inflated price. I've seen this with Christian radio other places - competition is fierce as it is in secular, so are the business moves.

Like most of your post, this one is way off and is unsubstantiated by facts. It's also not really how EMF works. They aren't playing a horse-trading game. They are playing a buy and hold game.

Secondly, KSBJ is not really strapped for cash. They run a healthy surplus every year. They had enough profit in just 2010 to cover the 96.9 acquisition with a couple hundred thousand left over.

EMF has gone into several markets with Air 1 when there's already been an established CCM station. Tulsa is a good example of such a market, where KXOJ had already been dominant for a decade or two. In fact, Tulsa has had Air 1 for at least 6 years while it just recently got a K-Love stick that's a poor rimshot out of Okemah. So, I don't think it's a foregone conclusion that EMF will go with K-Love simply because that's their usual MO.
