AAA/Adult Alternative in South Carolina

Let's see we have WXRY 99.3 in Columbia and WALC 100.5 in Charleston. While both may not be full fledged AAA's, they are certainly different and fun to listen to. I might as well add WCOO 105.5 The Bridge in Charleston to that list to since they are more in a AAA direction. My question is, which market supports it more, Columbia or Charleston? We don't really know in Columbia because WXRY is a LP station. By the way, what will it take for WXRY to get a better stick? I really love the station and they have really changed my tastes in music away from the other stations and opened me up to great music. Also, I think Greenville very well could support an AAA station. 96.7 would be the perfect spot to fulfill that void. Discuss.

While WALC isn't completely AAA, the ratings aren't very impressive at all, they didn't even get a 2 share the last book. I wonder how much longer CC will hold on to it (isn't it up for sale?).

Thanks for the kudos.

AAA is a bit of an odd format in that unlike CHR or AC, it's really hard to pigeonhole the format. Some AAA's, like KFOG/WXRT lean very classic-rock oriented, whereas others lean more contemporary. The beauty with the format is that you can tailor it to the market situation and not violate the expectations of the listeners when it comes to the format.

I think WALC's problem is that they've always been an afterthought. Every time I have gone to Charleston, I'll have it on and drive around and it just doesn't feel like Charleston. It sounds very very generic. But then again, you can say that about a lot of CCU stations outside of the major markets. WALC would do really well if they had the desire and had someone in place to really build the station.

I haven't gotten our latest report, but as of the spring book, we were running 100 listeners per watt....as opposed to B106 which runs about .56 listeners per watt (both stations measured by class-reference maxium ERP). :)
 
Hey thanks for responding, seriously, what would it take to get you guys on a good signal? I would figure at least 99.1 would be up for grabs, it would be better at LP than 99.3 would. Well, good job on the station, and thanks for opening up my music tastes.

There are 3rd adjacency spacing issues with 99.1 right now. Should the bill pass Congress and go to signature, the Commission will be directed to remove the 3rd adjacency protections currently imposed on LPFM. Interestingly enough, translators aren't required to protect 3rd adjacencies and can run up to 2 1/2 times the power we can. Go figure.

There are some even more exciting proposals before the Commission right now. Chairman Martin hinted that after the DTV transition, that he would like to see a local DTV service. We'd definitely jump on DTV if it became reality.
 
Dude your right about 3rd adjacent protections being stricter than translators our 105.5 LPFM signal was harder to fit in guide lines than either one of our translators for the same requierments of spacing and the translators can run higher power levels. I think the 3rd adjacent will be adjusted for LPMF's soon.
 
If the bill gets through Congress, the statutory barrier to being on a 3rd adjacent goes away. Funny thing is that while the FCC was barred by Congress from waiving the 3rd adjacent for LPFMs, in at least one case it did permit an endangered LPFM to move to a second adjacent. The full-power did consent to the move.

I agree with RECNET's position that LPFM's should be able to use the same power levels and spacings as translators.
