AAA needed here

Why is there no AAA station in Dallas? We have all noted how bad the local radio scene is and I think AAA would give a nice varient to what we have. So far, I like what I have heard out of Lonestar, but that's not AAA. The original 93.3 ZONE days were very cool, but we know what Mr. Strong did with that.

The problem with The Zone was that it seemed to skew female.

A 50/50 male and female targeted Triple-A would be nice. Take Austin's KGSR and clean it up with a little Dallas polish, and you'd be in good shape.
 
That must be why my Zone T-shirt fits like a blouse...

CBS could use their own WXRT or CC could use their own KTCZ as a template for one of their DFW signals. 96.7 would be a good signal for AAA, IMHO.
 
XRT is a legendary station -worthy of much respect.

However, they should not be used as a template for anything outside of Chicago. The station is VERY Chicago and is very financially successful because of the market heritage - not their current Arbitron position.

While a station in the spirit of AAA may make sense in Dallas, looking to Chicago or Minneaopolis for a template would be a big mistake.
 
We don't need a AAA...what we need is more spanish and R&B/Hip-hop/Rap stations...we just don't have enough!
 
NO Graywolf we need more country stations with spanish speaking announcers that used to work at hip hop stations. :-\

We could use a Black Talk station.
 
And we need another "true" all-news station; KEWS comes to mind. Also needed is a Jazz station, Another shot at the Café 990 attempt. Maybe another KNUS like station? Oh yeah and the big one... BRING BACK THE ELEVATOR MUSIC FORMATS like KMEZ / KOAX! ;D

And how about a 70's / 80's station? ;)

I thought KERA 90.1 did a wonderful job with their version of "AAA" back when they were "one of a kind, KERA"

The sets of music were thoughtful and sounded hand-picked, they made road trips over there much more inspiring.

The last time I was there they still did occasional blocks of music and broadcast "World Cafe". I hope that great library they have is still there.

Are they doing HD? If so have anything on their HD2 channel? With so few radios on the street I'd be surprised for anyone to run anything more than music from a programmed computer or network feeds.

I could dig that. And, yes, KERA has served up some top notch Triple-A in years past.

I appreciate the poster who cautioned against bringing Triple-A templates from other cities into Dallas. Triple-A is dependent on home-grown tastes--maybe more than any other format.
 
My choice of the word template may have been miscontrued. What I was getting at is that CC & CBS both have successful major market AAA outlets. Emmis also does with KGSR in Austin which others have mentioned as being something that could be tried in DFW (Emmis does not own anything in DFW however).

The complaint earlier in this thread abot the Zone was that they were female leaning. I don't believe that is the case with WXRT. For a male-oriented AAA in DFW, you would play Texas blues (whereas WXRT plays Chicago blues). You would select local artists/regional artists appropriate for North Texas (not the same as Austin). You would include classic rock and classic alternative that is not overexposed or low brow for the male demographics as well. You would include an occasional appropriate country song. You might throw is a smash hit classic once in a while. And most importantly you would play new AAA and Alternative music while not being too folksy, mellow, poppish or harsh. Those are the same attributes that WXRT feature (with a Chicago flavor).

And you would get a 1.2 (if you're lucky) and lose money hand over fist...


(And if you disagree with my assesment, try this- look at the current landscape, and tell me where this station is going to get it's audience from. Just ballpark figures of 10% of it's audience from here, 20% of it's audience from there, etc...
Then we can see if we agree with your predictions...Because offhand, I don't think you're typical young edge listener is going to sit through mellow AAA, blues, calssic rock, etc...Classic alternative maybe...
So just tell us where you think this audience will come from. KVIL's male listeners? Do you think both of those guys will switch? And all seven of the men that listen to mix? Hell, if they're girlfriends and wifes won't give them their testicles back long enough to let them switch to a real radio station now, what makes you think they'll have the cojones to switch to AAA? )

There's a difference between losing money and not making as large a profit as the mother company wants. A Triple-A would NOT lose money in Dallas. If you're point is that it's unlikely that a Triple-A would be a top 5 performer in this town, they you're probably right. But I could see a Triple-A settling in between 5 and 15--depending on how well it's done.

And I'll tell you where listeners would come from. Not KVIL. Triple-A listeners fancy themselves music elitists, and they despise the majority of bland artists on a soft rock station. And, yes, you could probably count on stealing some males AND females from Mix. Mix rotates a few Triple-A artists. But the majority of Triple-A listeners flat out don't listen to Dallas radio right now. They listen to their own CD's or iPods. And don't kid yourself: this is a large population of twenty-to-forty-somethings.

If you could make your Triple-A seem cool to them and provide info on the local music scene, then you'd get them to listen.

The other thing about Triple-A listeners is that they're very forgiving of the rambling, non-tight DJ. Slick jocks turn them off and push them away. A lot of the "rules" that commercial stations cling to are exactly what Triple-A listeners are trying to get away from.
