AAR gets bad news in Philly

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer (not any right wing blogger) Al Franken and AAR are doing poorly there (excerpt):

Here, it doesn't even register a pulse. The flagship show, hosted by author and former Saturday Night Live comic Al Franken, airs from noon to 3 p.m. weekdays on WHAT (1340 AM).

Both WHAT and the show have fallen off the charts, according to radio-rating service Arbitron, meaning there were too few listeners to measure during the second quarter of this year - the so-called spring book. Franken's show didn't start on the station until Aug. 30.

Franken named his show The O'Franken Factor to tweak his archrival, populist pundit Bill O'Reilly, whose TV show The O'Reilly Factor on the Fox News Channel outdraws all other talk shows on cable, and whose nationally syndicated The Radio Factor, with more than three million listeners nationally, is tied for ninth place.

Measured season-to-season - the most accurate way to assess audience preferences, because listening patterns vary throughout the year - Air America has lost audience in major markets, including New York and Boston, since April, May and June of 2004.

Franken, best-selling author of such anti-conservative tomes as Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them and Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, chose to go head-to-head with gabber Limbaugh in many markets. This, it turns out, was not such a good idea.

Limbaugh, still the giant among talkers, with 14.75 million listeners on 600 stations, has squashed Franken like a bug.

I notice your link hast he word "gossip" in it. I wonder way that is.

Nice try.

Not a huge shock if true. Has anyone here ever listened to WHAT? They have an awful 1k signal. I have two friends in Philly who would listen to the local station if they could, but they can't get a decent reception to even bother.

Apparently that's where the Inquirer puts news of bugs being squashed. Did you expect AAR to be covered in the business section?

Why so angry? Take a chill pill. (That's what your buddy OxyRush would do. ;) )

So WHAT is like on a 1kw station and OxyRush is clobbering WHAT/AAR in the ratings. This is what we call... BFD.

In many cases, I've seen radio covered in the business section.

Some papers have their radio column in the business section.
______________

WHAT-AM is pretty much a joke. It has a horrible signal, and only airs two AAR shows (Franken and Rhodes), as far as I know. The rest of the schedule is black-oriented talk. AAR will never be successful there.
______________

Sure, but AAR is more a religion than a business.

How do you explain the Salem stations?

Your argument, PW, is like being shocked that the new Krispy Kreme kiosk is failing as a business on the cardio floor of the local hospital.

WHAT-AM is a HORRIBLE signal. I am not saying that great signal = great ratings. Salem has some great AM signals with no listeners. But come on. In nearly every market progressive talk is now on the dial, the comservative leaning station(s) are much better powered day and especially night.

I didn't make an argument, just referenced an article in The Philadelphia Enquirer. But You got me thinking. Why does AAR have their programming almost exclusively on stations with HORRIBLE signals (according to what I read here)? Maybe they just don't know much about the radio business, their chosen field of endeavor. It's just everything else they are experts on.
