AAR in Akron, Ohio

Apparently WJMP, a small AAR affiliate in Kent, Ohio, is dropping the format after only a few weeks to switch to the Fox Sports network recently abandoned by CC's WARF in Akron.

WARF, a lib-talker, seems to be adding some of the AAR shows to its schedule.

Thats OA's blog...and its good news to hear that AAR (or at least some of it) will be heard in Akron....i think no matter what Randi gets screwed when she is out of drive time....but then again, the midwest might like Ed better....since he seems to target the midwest....otherwise I hope Randi will get more time on the station.

I suspect that the causality goes in the opposite direction; that WARF (with the better signal) announced lib-talk, and that AAR quietly asked WJMP to give up their programming so WARF could carry it.<P ID="signature">______________

AAR, Franken on WARF

If you believe WARF/CC Akron/Canton's operations manager, aka R-I Cleveland board regular and WKDD PM driver Keith Kennedy, it was the start of the 1350 libtalk format that basically convinced WJMP to jump ship...according to him, just hours before 1350 changed format in late May. The station (WJMP) has a history of quick reaction to market changes, and is basically an experiment in format change for owner MediaCom, Inc., owners of much more stable talker WNIR/100.1.

Besides, it wasn't ever a given that 1350 would pick up any Air America programming. It's widely believed in the business that CC could well have launched it and kept it going without ever adding the network, a la KRPT/92.5 San Antonio.

BTW, about the original message here - yes, that's my blog, and yes, I gave proper credit to "nate81" on the Cleveland board for uncovering it. I would probably also have heard it myself over the weekend, had I not been hundreds of miles away from the WARF transmitter...

And someone else on the Cleveland board reports that AAR's Al Franken ran this afternoon on 1350. I don't expect them to pick up, say, anything but Franken and an evening run of Randi Rhodes, plus the filler weekend programming. Springer's on 50KW powerhouse WTAM/1100, and 1350 runs Stephanie Miller. Morning Sedition's slot is taken by Bill Press, and they may not get on Janeane Garofolo or Mike Malloy.

Still, that's a good lineup already for WARF.

If "Sedition," Janeane or Malloy ever surface on 1350, it would have to be in "best-of" weekend slots. A "Sedition" replay aired on WARF Saturday at 6am, for example.

Heck, it beats the little other weekend offerings that WARF had, pre-AAR. That was because the previous FSR format was a fall-back for NASCAR and Akron Aeros games... not to mention the brokered gospel shows on Sunday morning that have been on 1350 for well over 35 years.

See the Cleveland board for Keith's final lineup for 1350. As suspected, Randi Rhodes takes the full 6-10 PM slot.

The weekday lineup is now also posted here:

Questions to OA, any consensus on the reception of the new station to the public (bad pun not intended...LOL)?

I got to hear Lionel on my trip to SD (KLSD) and id rather hear Malloy....how would or will Ohio be receptive to either Malloy or Lionel...?

one more thought, switch randi and ed.....and switch malloy and Lionel..and that lineup is a powerhouse!...your thoughts OA?

Swapping Randi and Ed

Right now, WARF does not carry Mike Malloy. They didn't pick him up when they picked up Al and Randi. 1350 runs Lionel's live clearance 10 PM-1 AM (same slot as Malloy), then repeat him until 5 AM.

As far as switching Randi and Ed, I'm with you there. I'm not a huge fan of Ed Schultz. And unlike some of the more politically-oriented listeners who don't think he relates to diehard liberals, my criticism is non-political. I just don't think he's all that good of a host. I think Randi is much better in that regard, though even she has her moments where she gets off track.

Perhaps this is because Randi is a major market radio person who's worked in markets from New York to Dallas to Miami, and Ed's spent his entire radio career in Fargo, North Dakota. No offense to the good people of Fargo, but it's not the kind of market which breeds major market radio talent.

But it's not going to happen, that lineup switch. Jones Radio has sold Clear Channel on carrying the Schultz show live in afternoon drive, which forces Randi into evenings on not only WARF, but all but ONE CC Eastern time zone libtalk station. It doesn't hurt Randi that much out west, where his live 12-3 PM PT clearance puts her delayed show into afternoon drive, but it kills her here.

That single CC eastern U.S. station carrying Randi live 3-7 PM and Ed delayed 7-10 PM? Randi's long-time local home station in West Palm Beach, FL, WJNO/1290.

1350 is getting by on word of mouth..CC has billboards in the area with the Conservative Talk and Hot AC logos--but none for the AAR affliate..just black tarp over the old Fox Sports 1350 logo..waste of a billboard if you ask me :)
