Aaron Brown out at CNN?

That's what Drudge is saying so take it with a truckload of salt (that's why the question mark). He linked to 2 different sites with the news in the last 2 hours that gave "404 Page not found" errors, but he has a memo allegedly from Jon Klein on his site.

Convieniently, ABC and CBS both have their evening news anchor positions open.

Although some think Charles Gibson should get the ABC anchor chair, I think the network will keep him at "Good Morning Amnerica" (especially if Katie Couric leaves NBC, see below; Gibson, however, would also become ABC's anchor for live special events coverage and breaking news), and instead name Elizabeth Vargas as "World News Tonight" anchor.....unless Aaron Brown gets hired.

At CBS, Bob Schieffer has been interm anchor since Dan Rather left in March. However, I think the most likely scenario for CBS will be for Katie Couric to leave NBC and jump to CBS and replace Schieffer as anchor of the "Evening News".

My guess......there's a chance that Aaron Brown could return to ABC and possibly get the "WNT" anchor chair, but would not anchor special events and breaking news, which Gibson would continue to do (having done so in the absence of the late Peter Jennings).

Brown's return to ABC would = a good move, among the network's many options. Katie to CBS = wrong move, among The Eye's many options, also. The plot thickens.

To thicken the plot even further is the Robin Roberts factor. If Couric leaves NBC for ABC, would Roberts be reassigned back to sister network ESPN? My bet would be (unfortunately!) yes. Alternatively, Diane Sawyer could be reassigned to work exclusively on PrimeTime.

Aaron Brown could go to ABC or CBS (my bet is CBS), however he'll get the evening news job AND cover Breaking News and other live events (though if he goes to ABC, he'll be joined by Charlie Gibson and/or Katie Couric, should she join ABC).

Either way you look at it, ABC or CBS will get an early Christmas present - A filled anchor position.

Just my opinion :)

Cheers for now :)

Radio? Uhh.....What's THAT?? :)

It's Official: Brown Out After His Timeslot Taken Away

(AP) NEW YORK Nov 2, 2005 — Aaron Brown, once one of CNN's most prominent anchors, is leaving the network after a shakeup that gives his prime-time slot to rising star Anderson Cooper and expands it to two hours.

Cooper's old 7 p.m. EST show will be filled by an expanded version of "The Situation Room" with Wolf Blitzer, the late afternoon program attracting attention for its arresting use of multiple video screens.

With Brown left without a time slot, "we mutually looked at the lay of the land and came to this conclusion" that he would leave, said CNN/U.S. President Jon Klein.

---

It appears this isn't because Brown was given something else - it's because he lost his timeslot and probably felt ticked because of that. I love the "spend more time with his family" we always get in these kinds of press releases. First Scooter, now Aaron.

As to The Situation Room, "arresting" is probably the wrong word. It looks more like someone has been watching The West Wing way too much. The Wolf Blitzkrieg we're getting now is going too far. Four hours of the guy who never has a bowel movement is almost as irritating as ten minutes with Paula Zahn.

You're exactly right. And ABC would be shelling out some major league dollars to assemble a Brown-Gibson-Couric triple header. With Gibson already in place, the scramble for bucks to grease the deal would be interesting, along with the need (and cost) of keeping egos intact as the game plan was assembled to see who got how much and with what kinds of perks. This could be as interesting as the Letterman-Leno maneuverings for the Late Show and Tonight Show thrones.

No business like show (the news) business. Film......whenever.

Do you really think that Couric is in play? In Middle America, she's tainted goods because of a perceived lean to the left. In fact, heaven help her if she ever gets osteo - she'll look like a question mark! Ratings at Today have suffered over the past few years and her name commonly comes up as one reason for this. Yes, they are still #1 - but barely. And, GMA has actually beaten them out now and then. This after formerly being the morning news juggernaut for decades.

No, Elizabeth Vargas has been groomed by the network for years. And, she would be more affordable - and less controversial. She has all of the qualities to make a fine member of a Brown-Gibson-Vargas trifecta.

Simply an awful move to let Aaron Brown go. He's one of the classiest and most insightful folks I've ever seen on the air, and letting that expertise and experience go is a dismal commentary on TV news.

Aaron was a great host of the first incarnation of GMA Sunday on ABC, did a fine job on World News Now and brought some valued, welcome experience to CNN.

I have nothing against Anderson Cooper, but to shove aside a talent like Brown is pathetic.

I don't buy that scenario for a minute. ABC has so many talented folks in house that I don't see them going to someone who left the network. Much as I would welcome the move, I don't see it as remotely possible.

There may be a chance that Aaron Brown could fill the WNT spot, or he could join GMA, but I don't see that working out. Gibson and Brown both report breaking stories very well though. Hmmm. Maybe CBS will chose Aaron Brown instead of Katie. Of course, its up to the guy himself.

Katie Couric's health and percieved political leanings aren't going make a hill of beans difference. If folks really hated her, don't you think Today's ratings would have been tanking instead of merely losing ground to GMA?

She has her audience, that's for sure. But there is a difference between a venue such as Today (and it's typical viewer) and the Nightly News. One whiff of a perceived political bias can doom a network nightly newscast - which are suffering as is. And, there's not just a whiff afoot with Katie - she smells like she just left the Lancome counter at the DNC.

For the same reason, you won't see Bill O'Reilly offered such a gig either. These folks need to be non-controversial, yet possessive of a lot of "gravitas". Katie Couric does not fit that bill. Others at ABC do.
Edited by BRNout on 11/04/05 08:06 PM.

Hi everyone:

> > > Do you really think that Couric is in play?

It's possible (especially should NBC ever get tired of bending over backwards just to appease her ego or whatever it is that drives her to insist [demand??] NBC to send Matt Laurer on "assignment" whenever she damn well pleases)

In Middle

Umm....What does her health and political beliefs have to do with this discussion? You never did address this in your reply.

They have 'em at the RNC too.

No. That's why Shepherd Smith has the chair on FOX.

Which is why she would most likely take over Diane Sawyer's position on GMA (again!) SHOULD she ever decide to leave The Peacock to join The Mickey Mouse Club.

Just my opinion :)
