Abaondoned station website still running since 1994

After 14 years, this station in Arizona is still up and running as if it is still 1994. Some people on the Arizona boards think this is a fake but I dont see why anyone would wanna do that. Seems pointless.

www.power1490.com

Which brings me to my next question... is this the work of some radio geek who has too much time on thier hands or is this the real deal? If it is real I thought the playlist was hilarious. I also thought how the Tevin Campbell album on the home page that says IN STORES NOW was funny too.

Holy CRAP on a CRACKER!!!! This was a sight! And by the way it looks, they probably kicked ass on the air. I LOVE THE "Mini-Van"!!! ;D

I was using Photoshop professionally in 1994 and there are things on that web site that you couldn't do with Photoshop, or any other web design software in 1994. Without getting mind-numbingly technical, there are also design elements and techniques on that site that weren't supported in web browsers until 3-4 years later.

It's still funny and clever, but it ain't authentic.

Also, I wonder what the deal is with that barely-noticeable link on the bottom of the main page to an apartment rental site in Brazil.

Another reason to support that it is NOT real is the picture of 2pac on the home page banner. That pic of pac was from a photoshoot in 1996. I know because it was on his ALL EYES ON ME ALBUM which didnt come out till 1996 too.

Another thing, what kinda Hip Hop station plays REAL McCOY????

uuhhhhhhhhhhhggggghhhhhhh

What you talkin bout Willis?

Okay, bad joke but I couldnt miss the opportunity.

Great detective work my man.

Why would someone wanna make a fake radio site? If I am promoting something in Brazil I am not going to be making a bogus Arizona AM station.

Waste of resources?????

Hahahaha...I enjoyed reading this thread and all the "speculation" and educated guessing, etc.

My friend just called me tonight about the thread and sent me the link.

"Power 1490" was indeed an actual radio station, with the calls KJYK--around in the early 90's in Tucson, Arizona. It was the first radio station I worked at--I was lucky enough to do nights there at the age of 16--and what an adventure to be able to work at a Hip-Hop station while still in high school--talk about the time of your life! Though I was making 5 bucks an hour and at the bottom of the totem pole--and have since worked my way up the corporate ladder, made good money, and worked in big markets--NOTHING was ever as fun as that first radio gig. Just driving the station van around for the first time (it was actually an old bread/bakery truck!) and doing my first weekend overnight shift, were feelings that can't be duplicated.

Anyway--I built the site a few years ago, for fun, and as a "tribute" to Power 1490. If you lived in Tucson at the time, you know Power 1490 was a "cutting edge" station for that market, at the time. It was the only place to get Hip-Hop and R&B on the radio--and combined with the personalities who absolutely lived and died for the station, guerilla-warfare on the street, and almost the feel of a true "underground station" (kids were rigging up foil antennas just to get the station), people in Tucson til this day still wonder "what ever happened to Power 1490???"

Anyway, I tried to build the site as if it were still 1994. Whether it made ya wonder, investigate deeper, or just get a good chuckle--glad you found it.

FYI: We DID play Real McCoy. Even though we were remembered as a "Hip-Hop" station--remember, most Rhythm stations in the early 90's actually played a good chunk of dance AND pop along with the Hip-Hop (Real McCoy, Ace of Base, DJ Miko, etc.)

The Brasil link is hidden on there to boost search engine ranks for my Brasilian website.

Mystery solved...haha. Maybe it would've been more fun to keep ya guessing, but I owed proper respect to KJYK to elaborate.

Have a great long weekend!

R Dub, for what it's worth, I was about to post that I had heard the same thing. I wanted to offer you this advise: keep it up!

I worked evenings in radio and went to school at the University of Missouri to study computer science a few years ago. I took web design and decided to redesign the webpage of KTXR 101.3 in Springfield for my class project. At the time, the KTXR webpage was just their logo with a "listen live" link. I made a full-scale website out of it and put it on my resume. The result was me being offered a webmaster and jock job for a group in Indiana!
