There are plenty of drivers on the road overnight who could very well be glued to their radios. Amazon, UPS, FedEx, USPS, long-haul transport drivers, and regular people like me who choose to drive at night.

Most of those you mention use satellite radio, not stations that have to be changed when the signal fades out within an hour of driving.

So there is an audience for breaking news on talk radio stations, but again the main audience for this story is radio station executives who see the trade publication headlines like the one linked in the first post, and take that into consideration at contract renewal time.

Keep in mind that one of the big reasons to run 24 hours a day is to not have the big surprise of a transmitter that won't turn on at 6 AM. When I owned stations, I got tired of losing an hour or more in AM drive when something did not turn on and decided to make every station I owned run 24/7.

Good point Dave. When I went 24/7 at my Ohio station years ago my tube transmitter proved to be much more reliable than I had expected. Fewer down times. Go figure.

One of the problems after Princess Diana's death was beacause of her young age the networks had little or no material in her obit file. When Elizabeth Taylor was having her health problems, we would move her file out to the pending. Everytime we did, her health improved.

When my local station still says "24/7 coverage of breaking news" in 2026, I don't expect a canned national newscast. Right?

Then again, I had that sort of imaging when our local casts were canned from 1am-5am every night going back to the early 2000's.
 
When I worked briefly for a Beautiful Music station in 1978, one of my responsibilities was to record three TOH news briefs that ran from 7:00pm until 5:00am the next morning.

I always wondered about a breaking story happening overnight with no one even knowing to update that cart.
