ABC 15 Hires New Weathercaster

And, unfortunately, it's not Sarah Walters! :'(

tvspy.com is reporting that Amy Murphy, a weathercaster at KTTV in Los Angeles, is joining KNXV in Phoenix.

I had started watching ABC15 in the morning specifically because of Sarah Walters. I guess I will have to re-evaluate my morning news options.

OMG, I totally forgot! Brian4 pointed it out in this old thread: http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=45934.0

It's our old friend Amy Brooke, the morning met at 12 News when I first arrived in Phoenix. Honestly, I didn't like her at all. She didn't interact well with the 12 News am team at the time. It was like, "Here's Amy Brooke with the weather..." and she'd be looking like some hot, but aging model standing at the weather board.

Really?!? She's not better than Sarah. However, ABC 15 seems to be assembling a team of "formerly popular Phoenix morning people". Kirk better look out for his job. I'm sure that there's a former male am Phoenix news anchor looking for a job these days! :D Then again, Kirk is probably cheap.

Amy is a lovely person in real life, and she was extremely popular, both with viewers and with her colleagues. She left to be with her boyfriend in LA, and she's being welcomed back with open arms.
(She's been through a lot personally, so try to give her a break...she is really good at her job.)

And...side note...I can only pray I look as good as she does in her mid-40s when I'm that age. It's refreshing to me that she was hired over a 25 year old.

I'm sure that Amy is a lovely person and I'm sorry that she's been through a lot. I watched her for about a year or so on 12 News Today and acted like she didn't want to be there with the rest of the team. I'm sure she's being welcomed back because ABC15 is assembling the "formerly popular Phoenix morning people" team (which very rarely works, btw).

Regardless of whether or not it "very rarely works", I'd rather be watching ABC15 than any other channel for local news these days.

Doing weather on half-hour newscasts seems quite irrelevant and an unnecessary labor cost in Phoenix. Anyone who wants the largely repetitive weather forecast can easily tune to one of the sub loops or radio talkers.

Now if they'd just drop that Daphne Munro segment from the 10pm news - not that I don't like Munro, but I think the segment doesn't fit the evening news format. It's more suitable for a morning news show. They devote a lot of time to her telling viewers what they already see in the coupon flyers. Not much value added there IMO.

If ABC15 would just drop the "we're going to scare you to death" attitude in the evenings, it could be the best newscast in Phoenix right now. Honestly, the whole "coming up next, find out what in your household is killing you" - thing is getting really stale.

The nice thing is that the morning newscast doesn't take the "scary" tone and Connie is a great anchor.

1. Remember it is November Sweeps. Everything has to sound sensational (just look at the stories CBS-5 has produced).

2. Can their intro of the weather personality get any longer? "Here is ABC15 Chief Meteorologist Amber Sullens in the Desert Doppler 15HD Forecast Center" (That is half the time some stations give for a weather segment).

It could be longer. Their weather center could be sponsored by a business:

"Here is ABC15 Chief Meteorologist Amber Sullens in the Sun Devil Auto Desert Doppler 15HD Forecast Center"

Please don't give them any ideas! :D

Speaking of Connie, I agree that she is doing very well. The only thing I don't like is her long sign-off at 6:57am -- "Thank you so much for watching. We're already working on tomorrow's ABC 15 Morning newscast! Blah, blah, blah, blah...". She does the same thing every day -- it's annoying and a complete waste of time.

I totally agree! When she starts that, it's my que to switch to ESPN to see the top 10 plays.

Thank goodness someone else noticed! I thought it was only me.

I actually don't mind her thanking us for watching, but it goes on way too long.

OTOH, it's my cue to switch to Today, if there is breaking news!

Breaking news...hah! Today is two hours old (winter) when it airs. The only time
you get "live" is in the top of the 7 AM hour during DST, when they often update
for the left coast.
