ABC 15 Uses Scrippscast Technology

ftvlive.com has an article about the use of Scrippscast at ABC15. Apparently, it is more of a "cut-and-paste" type newscast. An employee at ABC15 is saying it is used on the 11am, 3pm, and 4pm newscasts. Essentially, it de-emphasizes the anchor and, in some market, the only live element is weather. Interestingly in Phoenix, weather is often the portion that is recorded (if there are no active storms in the area, which is 90+% of the time. Here is a link to the story:

This eerily reminds ME of Sinclair and its National Desk program... Less live, and less local... I'm NOT liking where they're taking this at all, especially given the employee's remarks!!! They probably should have asked for public input and opinion first... It's all gotten worse since the FCC's repeal of the Main Studio Rule years ago...

We have that here in the Nashville area WTVF News Channel 5 has been using this concept for the past month on it's 4:00pm and 10:00pm. newscasts. I think partly is that due to one of the anchors, Carrie Sharp, stopped doing the 10pm newscast earlier this year. The other main anchor Rhori Johnston anchor it by himself. It does feel awkward. Especially during the sports segment when it's showing a taped segment when it's sunlight with our sports anchor Jon Burton reporting from the Tennessee Titans Training facility. I guess this is a cost-cutting procedure. But I wonder what the other stations in my area (WSMV/Gray, WKRN/Nextstar, and WZTV/Sinclair) are thinking. They may do the same thing. I can't imagine NBC, CBS, ABC, or even FOX O & O's would do something this cheap.

Interesting, when Scripps purchase WTVF/journal, at the time WTVF was Scripps 2nd highest revenue station, Scripps was/is in several bigger markets than Nashville including Phoenix. In recent years Scripps has purchased stations, some doing far better than its long time owned stations and dump local management and on air talent to bring in its own people. I know Rori has been there for a long time but WTVF has seen a lot of turnover under Scripps.

Is WTVF recording newscast with anchor(s) or is anchorless? Scripps does both, the anchorless newscast were supposed to be used in smaller markets. But it seems at some point all Scripps stations will do some kind of “scrippscast.”

Both. The 10pm newscast has Rori standing outside of the desk in the intro and outro of the show. The 4pm is generally done without an "anchor" as Carrie Sharp makes appearances during the show here and there.

There's already cause for concern... A real "red flag" IF you ask ME...

I'm already seeing what "Scrippscast" does to the newscasts on WXYZ in Detroit...

We've noticed the 4 PM KNXV 15 news is Scripps b/c it looks like another person tells a quick story. It comes back to Faye Fredericks and she tells another quickie.
We titled this the hurry up News at 4.

This just INFURIATES me to no end especially with WTVF and of course all the other stations as well. This is the worst possible idea Scripps has had.

I was really hoping they wouldn't touch WTVF. I heard the news of Scripps News shutting down. It would be nice if they shut down the freakin Scrippscast too

It's probably cheaper for them to use national stories than to pay the salaries of more reporters at the local stations.
