ABC 6 News on WADK 1540 AM

WADK-AM 1540 from Newport, RI started broadcasting the audio of WLNE-TV 6's hourlong news as 4PM last week. This is a great move on WLNE's part to expand its audience for its greatly improved newscasts, especially at a time that most people are at work and can now listen on their radios. Also it solves a problem with the loss of the ability to pick up the station's audio signal after the digital changeover. Hopefully WLNE can find additional radio stations to broadcast its news. WLNE has definitely made great strides in trying to improve its ratings since Global took over the stations last November. I would think the station would try to add additional newscasts during the weekend mornings in the near future.

That 1540 signal should cover a good portion of Rhode Island, especially around Providence and the Newport area during the daylight hours. It is even more important now for WLNE as once analog TV ends on 2/17/09, the 87.7 signal will no longer be available on the average FM receiver. So, WLNE will no longer be able to promote the 87.7 signal on their newscasts. It might be a good idea for WLNE to get some airtime on a good full-time AM signal downtown. WHJJ might be good. I don't think WPRO would sacrifice drive time for WLNE.
