Did anyone see the story tonight on ABC 6. Jim Hummle went to cover a story at the Providence Place Mall about a security truck that was hanging over the edge of the parking garage. At the scene the security guards refused to let ABC 6 get a closer view claiming the area was private property even though they were letting the public get a closer view. If I owned the Providence Place Mall I would be embarrassed. The guards acted like fourth graders at recess.

I saw the story at 6pm. Jim Hummel was also on with Dan Yorke
around 6:45 Tuesday night. They were talking about the incident
& what type of action needed to be taken.Jim Hummel who was doing
his job. And so were the other media present. Both TV & Radio.And
in the air with news chopper 12 or 8 (depending on what side your seeing).
The Mall security guard who 'denied' Hummel access. Acted like a 7 year old hallway monitor in elementary school. Who just got his badge. That is so evident from watching the footage. And is not a 'slam' on his personal character.Not knowing what, why, or how the crash happened.But from the way that garage is built.Patrons do tend to have a lead foot from time to time in that place.And that is so uncalled for.

Unfortunately, the Providence Place Mall will not allow any media inside the mall for any reason...even if a station wants to do a Holiday Shopping story during the Christmas season. I think Mall officals are paranoid, because (for example) if a huge fight breaks out between rival gangs in the mall while TV cameras are there, the Mall can not hide the story then. The TV cameras will be all over something like that and would ask for comments from Mall officials. Mall officals can't stand bad press. Perhaps, this Channel 6 story was "bad press" as far as the Mall is concerned. I feel that it wasn't. Channel 6 was covering the story...period. It's evident the Providence Place Mall doesn't like any kind of press at all. I agree the Providence Place Mall Rent-A-Cops act like little children. Yes, the TV stations were doing their jobs. The Providence Place wannabee Cops (security guards) should have allowed the stations to get their video and move on. The security guard in question should be disciplined for his actions towards the media. It's obvious the representatives of the Mall give them a bad name. The Mall doesn't need the media to help them there. They do a good job of it themselves.

Did that change? I can remember seeing a WLNE reporter doing a standup on the escalator inside the mall right after 9/11. (A week after 9/11 actually) when they were doing a live shot from the Showcase cinemas in Seekonk. So I wonder if the rules have changed on that...
In regards to cameras inside malls, some malls don't allow cameras inside them. You'll never see the Springfield stations inside the Holyoke Mall at Ingleside.
The managment steadfast refuses it. I believe that's a Pyramid mall company policy. Who owns Providence Place?

Here in Connecticut, it seems to be a bit more relaxed. WTNH-TV (ABC) channel 8 of New Haven recently had their "Good Morning Connecticut" team make a weekend appearance in the Center Court area of Westfield Shoppingtown (formerly the Meriden Square Mall). Footage was shown in a commercial during Super Bowl XL. WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford and WVIT-TV (NBC) channel 30 of New Britain/Hartford have done several features inside WestFarms Mall, which straddles the West Hartford/Farmington town line (hence the name). Channel 30 is there quite often since their people simply cross under I-84/US 6 and go a couple hundred feet down New Britain Avenue (CT Route 71). Our other major mall in greater Hartford is the Buckland Hills Mall in Manchester. I never really see stories from there, so maybe their management won't allow it.

Buckland Hills is also owned by GGP.
Perhaps it is a company policy to deny television stations access to the property, but it certainly isn't against all media.
