ABC/Citadel Hot AC network voice-tracking

Re: ABC Hot AC format.

Now that I've this morning listened to two hours of back-to-back music with no jock voice of any kind, including missing from the top of hour music bed, I'm asking the question: WTF

Can anyone shed light on what's going on there? Since the 9am Pacific Time hour ended ahead of schedule (like 4 minutes), I'm thinking this was to be voice-tracked but for some reason there were no tracks? We're not talkin' middle of the night, it's Sunday morning 9am Pacific, noon Eastern.

Or was it to be a live shift but the jock didn't show up and the automation played through the music?

Anyone, anyone?

I used to work at a station that was a part-time affiliate of "Today's Best Hits." I was told it was live 24/7, except for when it ran the "Best of John and Mary" and even was run off of CD's rather than a computer based system. I never completely got that as I always wondered how Chaz Mixon could do Sunday nights on Today's Best Hits and do mornings at the Classic Rock Experience the next day. I seem to remember hearing Chaz lives out in either Denton or Wise County, and I figured he'd probably be getting home right about when he'd have to wake up if he was doing both of those shifts live!

In other words, I wouldn't be surprised if the format was automated, though that wasn't what I was told!

Well, it isn't the first time network affiliates have been fooled. I just don't understand why we aren't simply told what's going on, and we can decide if we want the service.

We know that both Dial-Global and ABC/Citadel automate the overnight shifts, and some of the formats have been automated for years, including Music Of Your Life, and ABC Stardust. The deal-breaker is when the network cuts corners by a) automating important day parts, and b) doesn't have somebody promptly fix a problem when it occurs.

I fully understand the economic issues facing broadcasters. I'm one of them. We choose network delivery so that we have a live personality at the other end. When that stops, what then is the reason for us to give up spot inventory? We can voice-track and run jockless just as easily as the network can, and be more flexible.

I was hoping on the Dallas board that someone might be willing to spill the beans and say what is really going on at the very large, very empty Citadel Broadcast Center.
