ABC/Cumulus

Mr. Boyce:
With Cumulus buying ABC Radio Network....will the ABC Radio Network make a push for more programming? I guess there could be a case for going after some other network shows that are profitable like Laura Ingraham (whos contract is coming to an end right?)

Cumulus did not buy us, Citadel did. Laura Ingraham has a contract with TRN and we do not tamper with other contracts. So no, we would not do that. But we did add Imus to our lineup, which launches Monday, so stay tuned.

pb

thats right...citadel rather...but the question remains, with Imus, Sean and Levin..there are other dayparts you could syndicate...and my thinking with someone like Laura, TRN can not compete if one of the major networks went after her when her contract is up and I would assume with the powerhouse lineup ABC already has, the billing for the network would jump pretty strong. ABC could literally be a turnkey network for talk stations all across America.

Slant says:

WABC already IS. I regret that I have but one radio station to give to my company. We are the only station in the nation that originates THREE of our local shows on the national platform. I doubt if any other station will ever try it. WSB in Atlanta does it with two....Boortz and Howard. Now WABC has three....Imus...Sean...and Mark. Again, I am not going to tamper with Laura Ingraham and TRN. She has a contract.

I would think that, technically, you could count Rush as the fourth. He did initially originate from WABC (on the national level), did he not?

great points...it will be interesting to see what changes come next year for ABC. It would be silly for Farid to not want to expand the ABC/Citadel programming platform...after all Phil, You guys are on a roll right now......and, if you have a 9-12 ET show that already has muscle, you guys can pretty much force Beck to second tier talk stations in markets that he is already on the top talk station. It will also give ABC/Citadel more muscle to convince stations to take the IMAN......just a thought. What the hell do I know

Holland: Good point about WOR but it is hard for me to think of them on a national platform anymore. Maybe they used to be when the Dolans were rocking and Joy Browne was too. They seem to be more on a regional basis now and on their owned stations, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Rush did originate from WABC but was never OWNED by the company. The fourth successful show was Drudge that did originate from WABC and was syndicated by the ABC radio network before petty politics forced us to give the show to Premiere on a silver platter.

I am not a big believe in cramming things down to local stations. They need to maintain local originality and control. So we probably will not "muscle" stations to take the Imus show. Right now there are enough takers, we don't need to.

"Let's go to the Imus toteboard!"

Phil,

"Regional?"

Through 11/30, I had spent 171 nights in 2007 in hotels.
(I've actually stopped stealing the little soaps and shampoos!)

NOT that I recommend that ANY sane person travel so much.
And I don't know how much YOU get out.
But everywhere I go, I hear Dr. Joy Browne. EVERYWHERE.

That aside...

FYI: On Friday, a reporter from Reuters asked me to SPELL "cram-down."

HOW MANY STATIONS HAVE SIGNED-ON FOR IMUS SO FAR?

HC

And while we're waiting for The Official List...

...let's have some fun.

PRECIDICTIONS: 90 days after his 12/3 return, Imus will be on HOW MANY stations?

I will go even further, not only could Farid create a lucrative network with more product, it could actually be beneficial to a lot of NT stations in America that are currently underperforming also....if ABC/Citdael can continue to create a dynamic programming lineup, they could leverage it into new media such as WiMax tech that is right around the corner. What radio content providers need to figure out is how to create revenue streams utilzing new distribution avenues.

SURROUNDED by black voices, I-man returns...

OK, he wasn't the ONLY white guy heard.

Sen. John McCain came on, called Imus "my friend" AT LEAST ten times, called YouTube "FaceTube," and ducked the gays-in-the-military question SO obviously that Imus called him on it...then let it go. Kinder-gentler I-man, eh?

But, at times, you wondered if he was kidding, when I-man shifted-into that black voice Hillary Clinton has been accused of shifting-into.

And, of course, WABC had some snappy new jingles.

FYI: morning trade press reports Imus launched on "about a dozen stations" today.
In 90 days: YOUR prediction?

"Taking stock on Wall Street..."

While we await that affiliate roster, let's go to another tote board:

Wall Street saluted I-man's return by sending Citadel stock (CDL) to what-appears-to-be an all-time low, down to $1.98 earlier today, vs. its 52-week high @ $11.01 in February.

Buy!

It may not see $11 again, but in-at-2-out-at-3 isn't a bad deal...

How many? Maybe 20. The real issue is not how many but which ones. Quality, not quantity.

This board is filled with speculation that Imus is going to bump established, even dominant, local morning shows (including those on the flame-thrower former ABC heritage news-talk stations).

In his previous life, as I said in another post, Imus was mostly on also-ran talkers outside New York, the number two or three talker in town, all or mostly syndicated with second tier shows. I'd be surprised to see him on any AM with more than two share. Unless of course Citadel corporate is even dumber than even I give them credit for. Then again, dumping Curtis and Kuby already puts them high on the dumb-o-meter.

However, Citadel does have a lot of medium market properties and Imus could work well (and cheaply) for them there (and goose the affiliate count).

Holland, I will get to your question but first:
But everywhere I go, I hear Dr. Joy Browne. EVERYWHERE.

Not to criticize Joy Browne...I have always liked her. I do not travel like you do, but our affiliate team knows a lot about what is going on out there, because we are pitching Levin for night clears ALL the time. I honestly can't remember running up against Joy hardly ever. So maybe she is on somewhere, but she is not a major factor.

HOW MANY STATIONS HAVE SIGNED-ON FOR IMUS SO FAR?

We launched with 19 and will have 21 starting Monday. We have about 10 more in the hopper that are no-brainers that just were not ready to start on such short notice. We had about 3 weeks to launch this thing into national syndication. The affiliate team did a phenomenal job.

Just to put that in perspective we launched Mark Levin with 14 and today he is on 150. Clearing in AM drive is the toughest daypart because most stations want to be live and local in AM drive. I get that. But we are a great alternative for those that can't be. WTKK in Boston is a great affiliate. WSKO in Providence has a great signal and will be another good market. I am also working on some very big sticks in some top 10 markets that I can't announce now, but I am confident they will come.

Good evening from Saginaw...

Phil,

LIKE the new jingle.
I've heard the show on both WABC and WSKO/Providence, which bails-out mid-jingle cleanly.

But WHERE'S "Quack-Quack" on the timecheck???

HC

Phil, you're a great guy and a great programmer, and I got all the respect in the world for ya, but I gotta take issue with the 'cram-down' comment. Not saying you're responsible, but Levin has been 'crammed-down' to MANY stations through the Hannity affiliation. I've talked to a good number of program directors who say they HAD to take Levin or they were afraid they'd lose Hannity to the competition. Is that not cramming down?
