ABC Makes More Changes to its ‘GMA’ Extension

There's also the factor that whatever show ABC puts in the 1 PM ET/Noon CT time slot most CBS and NBC stations are doing local news (At least in the Central time zone), so nothing they have had in recent years in that slot has done well. So whatever they put in that time slot may need to be considered as not having the best ratings but adequate to fill that time and hopefully do better than any other option or turning the time back over to the local stations.

The Chew had a good run. AMC before that. They just ran their course.

An extension of the existing news franchise is a logical business decision.

Trying to save a dead horse?
ABC would be better off with weekday game shows. Pyramid with a smaller top prize (like $25,000) and Match Game could challenge LMAD and TPIR in the ratings. They have dominated Sunday and Wednesday nights.
Better yet - BRING BACK All My Children & One Life To Live (Only as 30 minute episodes instead)

Either that OR...

* Produce an ALL GUYS version of "The View" (Why not??)

* Turn the time over to ESPN to produce some sports programming featuring female athletes, cheerleaders & sports wives

* Turn the time over to the affiiates (which has already proven to a winning formula)

Because there's a reason they're gone and only a handful of soaps remain. It's a nonsensical idea.

Because it's not what they're after in daytime.

* Turn the time over to ESPN to produce some sports programming featuring female athletes, cheerleaders & sports wives
Or they could continue using their in-house news operation, which is the entire point of what they're doing, and have programming that has the potential for wider appeal than just sports.

They're not in the business of just handing over every time period they've got. They've struck a balance of giving back time over the years; for now, there is no reason for them to relinquish yet another daytime hour.

I think we have to remember what else is available during daytime TV over what was even 30 years ago:

Then: 40 years ago there were a handful of channels. At least one per network: ABC, NBC, CBS and maybe a local independent. Each competed for a larger daytime audience with game shows and soaps.

Today: Cable and Satellite have what; 300+ channels? There is everything from movies, shopping, sports, novellas (soaps), talks shows. Heck there is even a dedicated Game Show network.

Then: 30+ years ago stay-at-home mom's were much more commonplace. The big three were focused on that audience.

Today: stay-at-home parents are fewer and more mobile, or choosing to spend their time participating in various forms of social media via their phones, or computer.

The point is; just because putting soaps or games shows on during mid day hours when those were the only choices of entertainment, wouldn't apply today. In fact doing so would be a waste of time and money for networks.

Exactly. And this is why the herd thinned to one (one and a half for CBS :) soap per network, and even those are precarious on a good day.

For those who are home during the day--which certainly includes not just "stay at home moms," but dads, workers on non-daytime shifts and/or who have some weekdays off but work weekends, and those who do remote work from home and maybe like a little background noise, there is also Netflix, Hulu et al plus, with many "cable" providers, on-demand options and DVR recordings....the world has moved on. There is still a viable, sellable audience, but that doesn't mean cost-intensive soaps are a rational choice.

I watched a bit of the show today and from what I can see there's no major change except for the title and adding Keke as a regular. But still I'd rather see the celebrity interview shows like this rather than the big 3 of what has ruined daytime TV (Trash talk, courtroom shows, and infomercials)
